And, it might seem like our job isn't that hard, but the things we have to know! Wow! We're not just tooth-scrapers. We need to be able to look at medications that a patient is on and know how our anesthesia will react with those meds... we need to be able to look at a sore in the mouth and relay to the dentist what it might be... we need to be able to take and develop xrays and see possible problems in those xrays. There is a lot of training before a person can be a dental hygienist, and school is expensive. If we weren't paid well, we'd never pay off our student loans!

Hygienists are in demand. But that's not the only reason we get paid "big bucks." Dental hygienists are health care professionals. The education to be a hygienist is competitive and rigorous. To the patient, it may not seem like the hygienist is doing a lot, but spend one day in your hygienist's shoes, and you will see it is not a piece of cake. It is a very busy, very fast-paced day. I work non-stop to make sure I get my patient's in and out on time. You have to work quickly, but also take the time to build relationships with your patients, and educate them.

Oh be careful when you say the job is not that hard. Come and try it out before you give any such opinions. I agree that hygienists are in demand. We need to ensure patients have CLEAN teeth, teeth w/o calculus before the dentist can start massive work on them. See how many hygienists are there here? Give us the respect we deserve!
Thanks for asking anyway. It's nice to see how many hygienists are in here. =)

Because they free up the dentist hands. So we can make bigger bucks. Why would I use up my time doing cleanings at $160 /hr. (2/ hr) when I can do $300 / hr in fillings and Crowns. So the Hygenist is valuable to the dental team. Get it?
That's why hygenist are in demand!

With language and words like "ain't" and using "there" when you mean "their" who are you to be judging what is hard and what is not? Do you know what ANUG/ANUP means without looking it up? Can you explain why Dilantin causes Gingival overgrowth? We get paid big bucks because we have to know a hell of a lot more then just scraping teeth. You are entitled to your opinion, though it is made out of ignorance.

You obviously have no idea of the education and training that Hygienists have to go through.
