Almost all of my friends have this rule at their homes. For the most part the pile of shoes at the door is the first clue that you take off your shoes. Some people I visit just came out and told me "Hi, take off your shoes before you come in" A couple of other people I found out because other friends visited them first and told me about there house and said "they make you take shoes off inside." Others have a sign on their door the most popular one is "stocking feet please." My house is a no shoes house we have piles of shoes at the door and that is what usually clues everyone into the sock feet thing.

We have this rule at my house. We just park the shoes by the front door and almost everyone immediately figures it out. Why do we have this rule? Because where we live, Oregon, it rains alot, and carpets can actually grow fungis/molds when they get moist for long periods of time, plus, there is always a little amount of grit on the bottom of eveyones shoes, and that grit destroys hardwood flooring and tile. I paid bucket-load of money to build this house, so I need to keep care of it for a long time. Take a moment and check out the price of good carpet.

Lots. Now days its always polite to ask. We have a huge wicker basket full of shoes right next to our entry way in the foyer and a sign that says.."please remove shoes". Why? Well, we don't want to replace our flooring and there are little fingers that can get stepped on with babies crawling on the floor and etc. Its not so much a rule as a request. The Japanese have been doing this for centuries..and I guess it finally caught on over here. Love in Christ, ~J~ <><

In my culture, it's known that you shouldn't wear shoes in the house. So I know a whole bunch of people and families that has a shoe rack by the door - pretty much telling you to take off shoes upon entering their place. It's fine for me - I've been doing it all my life. even now, when I'm entering a home, I'll take off my shoes by the door.
However, i don't have that rule in my home, simply because I don't want to make people uncomfortable. If they want to take off their shoes, it's fine, but if not, it's okay too.

I don't but that's because I am buying a new carpet but to find out about their rules. It's simple, I always say out of respect, "I'll just take my shoes, but where do I put them?"

They either reply, "Thanks, the rack is just here." Or they'll say, "no need, it's ok."

I feel, if you respect someone's home, it gives them an understanding that you mean well, you care.

By the way, if they ask, if you want a drink, don't say no. They'll think they're drinks or they are not good enough for. So say yes, even if it is water, just say yes. - People skills dude.

That's it, done.

My dad and stepmom have a very lax no shoes rules in their home. They'd really prefer it if people didn't wear shoes inside, but they don't get upset if you don't take them off.

My mom and stepdad have a strict no shoes rule in their home. It's because they have fairly new carpeting and just don't want to get it dirty.

In my home, I'd prefer if the shoes were taken off, but I don't really care as long as they're not dirty.

I am pretty flexibe. Growing up we removed our shoes but we were pretty informal. Then growing up I noticed how badly it detroyed an elegant party outfit to take of the pretty shoes - so think if the weather is fine, and the shoes are clean just wiping the feet is appreciated. I know that in europe nobody took off their shoes and they did not wipe their feet either - which I would have appreciated - they really dirtied up my rugs. So the rule in my house is .... be considerate and make sure you are not making a mess. SHOES on a SOFA - NO I can't afford such a life.

No I don't have this rule in my home, but ones that do. GOOD FOR YOU, people have the right to make any type of rule in their home. I see absolutely nothing wrong with it at all.

I know several people including myself that has this rule. However, I have a bench in my foyer and basket for their shoes and a basket with clean booties for my guest. When they go to leave they throw the booties in the dirty basket. My guest seem to like that idea. Some people are afraid their feet smell bad or don't want to be barefoot. Oh and by the way just for that reason, I have one of those plug in air freshers right by the basket of shoes. lol..

I know some people that have that rule. And it is their house so if they want me take off my shoes I will, but I don't feel very welcomed into someone's home if they stop me after one step and say take off your shoes. Especially if I'm wearing flip-flops and I have to go barefoot or shoes with laces that take a few seconds to get off and on.
I'd rather my guests feel comfortable and do what they want to do rather than force them to take off their shoes. It's just carpet afterall...aren't people (especially friends) more important?
