The sell by date is the same as the cook by date. However, even if you waited longer it would probably still be safe because all the bacteria would die when you cooked it. Still, I would play it safe and not eat old chicken.

First of all- If you aren't going to use it within a day or so of purchasing it, freeze it regardless how much longer the shelf date is on the package.

You will know if the chicken is bad. The skin takes on a pasty look, the bone becomes discolored, and it stinks like hell.

When it doubt, throw it out.

um.. sell by means legally but if i was you don't buy or eat it its animal dead matter. . putrid.. so milk can be sold and dranken by a few days after but in general meats fresh use up by 3 days marriott corp all over the world has high standards of this in their foods chains and hotels. I go by them as I worked for them. 3 days fresh meat use it up or buy it wash it and freeze it asap. thing is was this chicken already prefrozen? and if it was then use it the same day well coked with all the hoopla going around about ecoli and bird flu im surprised u asked.. be safe treat yourself better than saving a few pennies or asking this again be safe.. fresh is best ask if it was prefrozen keep no longer in fridge then 3 days anything.. accept eggs and cheeses. botulism has no odor..

Cook it within a day or two. Better yet, just freeze it. S*** happens. The microwave thaws it out nicely. Why take the chance? When chicken starts turning bad it announces itself with trumpets.
