I am a 5'6" 16 year old girl who weighs 250 and wears a size 20. I have started eating less and cutting out foods, and attempted to run1.6 miles--I can only do it if I stop to walk a lot. How long should this take. I'm going to college next fall--is it possible to lose 100 pounds by then? More? Thanks for your help!

Most health care professionals say that the most you should lose on a well structured, healthful diet is 2 pounds per week.

But you've seen many ads and claims that you can lose vastly greater amounts in relatively short time. Most are bogus and a ploy to get you to purchase some sort of pill, and the rest can be risky to your health if you try to lose too much, too fast.

Try going to webmd.com and put in a keyword like "diet" or "weight loss" to do a little reading on it before beginning a program of your choosing, especially if the program you're considering is one of the riskier ones.

Lastly, don't panic. You'd like to lose weight. You may not do it all before school starts, but be patient and allow the effort to take it's time and be healthy.

Not in any safe way. You can lose some in 3 months, but 33 a month? No way. If anyone tells you otherwise, they're wrong, and if you follow their advice you may not make it to September, you could be very sick or dead.

You are on the right track for losing weight safely. Keep that up and don't get discouraged. Don't worry about having to stop while running - better yet, try walking until that doesn't get you too winded, then power walk, then run. It may take a few weeks to get there, but it's safer and you are less likely to get discouraged.

Set reasonable goals. With unreasonable ones you will feel like a failure when you mess up, then you'll go back to old habits. If you blow it one day, just start again the next. We all screw up -- the successful ones just keep trying :-)

Just remember, if you want to keep the weight off for your whole life you have to develop habits you can live with your whole life. Eating less and better and walking or running a mile or more a day is something you can keep up with, and it's free :-) Don't let someone sell you something different.

At your age - and depending on what your eating habits were before - yes I think you can do it. But it will require the exercise... do not give up!!! At 5'6 I'm thinking you wouldn't want to lose any more than 100 - get fit - not just lose the weight.
Drink tons of water. Take a daily vitamin.
At age 16 I lost 40 pounds in three months just from cutting out the soft drinks, candy bars and junk snacks.
And as far as running - if you have to rest, power walk until you can regain the run - keep your heart rate up!

GOOD LUCK!!!! You can change your life here... don't quit.

How about you talk to your doctor? I feel very sorry for you. I've never been overwieght or underweight, but I know it's scarier to be underweight. I have a step-brother, a step-sister, and a couple of friends that are VERY underweight. Nobody makes fun of them because it's "cool" to be underweight these days. Try a diet, ask your doctor, and ask people who have succsessfuly lost weight from being overweight. Talking ot people who have been through the same thing always helps anyone.

Be very careful when you're trying to lose weight and get back into shape. You should have help with this. Losing weight too quickly can be dangerous. A change in lifestyle can affect you in other ways also--good luck and be careful.

its considered unhealthy if you lose more than 2-5 pounds a week. that means it would take you 20-50 weeks to work off 100 pounds

Just keep pushing yourself to your limit, more and more, and sooner or later your limit will inch further and further away. If you keep up your routine and keep pushing yourself, it's definitely possible to lose 100 pounds by next fall. But remember, stay healthy about your quest.
