Q-Tips® were invented in the 1920's by a Polish-born American named Leo Gerstenzang.
It seems that Leo's lovely and beautiful wife had rigged up a different device to clean their baby's ears at bathtime - a toothpick stuck into a piece of cotton.
Clearly, one wrong slip-up on Mom's part meant a nice little wound to little baby Gerstenzang.
Leo decided to design a ready made cotton swab that would do the same with less risk.

Q-tips are probably the best-known brand of cotton swabs in Canada and the United States. Q-tip brand cotton swabs are manufactured by Unilever. Most commonly they are used for cleaning ears (though entering the ear canal to remove earwax is no longer advised, as stated on the package) or applying medicine or makeup. They were first produced in 1923 after Leo Gerstenzang, the original founder of the Q-tips Company, observed his wife adding cotton to toothpicks to clean their baby's ears. It was originally called Baby Gays and in 1926 was changed to Q-tips Baby Gays. Later the name Baby Gays was dropped. The "Q" in the name stands for quality. "Q-tip" has become a genericized trademark in much of Canada and the United States (people refer to any brand of cotton swab as a Q-tip) In the UK, they are simply referred to as 'cotton buds'.

So that they would have a product that they could put the warning on the pack that they should not be inserted into the ear canal. (Which is actually about the only thing people actually do with them.)

You're cleaning your outer ear....it feels good, so you dig further......you close your eyes, open your mouth and keep on digging......You speed up digging faster and faster......WHAM! there it is.....The cotton tip lodged in your ear! So who do you run to????? That's right, good ol' doc.....................
