First I think the neighbor should try to find the owner of the dog. This may be someones beloved pet and may have just wondered off and gotten lost.. Older dogs tend to loose their direction. Second my son and daughter both have rottwilers and they are the gentlest dogs I have ever been around. My grand-daughters play with them all the time. I've seen some pretty mean small dogs so I tend to get upset when the bigger dogs get a bad rep. A dog is a lot like a person. If they are treated mean, they will become mean but if treated with love and kindness they will return it twice over. Rottwilers do tend to pant a lot with their tounge out but if she is concerned then a trip to the vet if the best thing.

Rotts have a bad rap. I've met many who are gentle and sweet. They have been bred to be guard dogs, so that's when they (are supposed to) become agressive. The panting could be a medical problem, and if the neighbor is keepin it, should take it to a vet. Sometimes these "fate" meetings can turn into beautiful and lasting friendships between people and animals. Maybe they both need each other.

I believe a dog is considered stray when he doesnt have an owner, whether from abandonment or from being born that way. To my knowledge, people only "kill" stray dogs because it seems noone will miss it or notice it is gone. While it is sad that this happens, it still does.

If you are concerned then call animal control and they will deal with the situation but just because puppy is a rottie doesnt mean that its automatically going to start eating people and pets alike. That has more to do with how it was treated by who ever was its last owner and how much survival instinct it still has if it thinks its going to be attacked then it might very well.Larger breeds are known for their health issues so call animal control.

Well it would be kind of her to keep it. If she turns it into a shelter it would at least be cared for for a couple weeks, before being put down. It does sound like the dog may have a medical problem. Who knows how long it wandered. It may have some sort of cancer...

The best thing your neighbor could do is take the dog to the vet if they are gonna keep it, if not then call the pound or an animal refuge place to come and get it

If she wants to keep it she should have it examined by a vet. It may have a medical condition that is treatable.
The vet may also be able to check it for a microchip. It may have a previous owner who is looking for it, especially since you said it is friendly.

Definitely take to a vet. Shaking can be a sign of pain. Heavy panting could be a sign of heartworm or pain.

I can't tell you if there's something wrong with the dog but you can't assume it's going to bite or attack someone just because it's a rotti. It's like a stereotype.

did you take into consideration that all dogs pant heavily, its their way of cooling off, they can't sweat! rots get a bad rap but if you are uncomfortable have your neigh check her out. bless you or any one else for taking care of a stray. thank you
