Baby budgies about five months or less have all black eyes. As they mature, the irises lighten to a very light brown or grey. Once your budgie is a year old, its irises will have lightened completely. See http://www.budgieplace.com/age.html to see pictures of how the iris lightens with maturity.

Your bird's eyes were black because he was a baby. All baby birds have very dark eyes, but as they grow the eye takes on a lighter pigment. Yelow, orange, blue, silver, etc, are all normal colours. It happens to all birds as they grow up, it's nothing to worry about!!
