I'm sorry, but if your dog was mostly inside the house and now your parents are forcing him outside that is cruel. Ask them how they would like having to live where they aren't use to. Try to get them to understand that animals have feelings to, not just humans.
He want's attention, just like a human and is working out his feelings by ripping up the grass. I hope you can get your parents to understand. Good luck to you. If you have to give him up make sure he goes to a good home and see if you'll be able to visit him, okay?

Think how the dog feels after five years of being in the family to being put in dogie jail.
I feel for you as a kid you don't get as much say as you would like, a family discussion is needed ,walking the dog more will help. can the dog be indoors some and in the kennel some.
feed the dog in the kennel ,have a house in the kennel and always water, Walk the dog and return to the kennel with a treat like a rawhide chew. In time the dog will get used to the change and won't bark but there will be a transition time and some work, if this can't be and you have to give up the dog comfort yourself by being sure it goes to a good home and believe you are doing right and best for your dog and that is unselfish love. good luck

Sit down and reason with your parents. If you have had the dog for 5 years then chances are, you see your pet as part of the family. Another child in your house perhaps. If you tore up the grass would they get rid of you? Of course not. And keep in mind that for 5 years your dog has lived inside. This new outside arrangement is just difficult for the dog to understand. He was basically just kicked out of his house.

Please get your parents to do some research on this!

Dogs are pack animals. When we bring home our puppies we become their pack. It is necessary to teach them who is in charge, but we're still their pack. Have you ever seen dog or wolf packs? They are very social, very close and the ONLY time a member is forced away from the group is in a crisis eg. starvation creating intense rivalry.

My dad used to train dogs and he used no other punishment other than "banishment". This was where the dog was taken to a place away from its human to a safe space (an empty room or a spot outdoors) for a few minutes immediately following the unwanted behaviour. This is so effective that within days he could break some very bad habits.

I say all that to say this, unwittingly, your folks are banishing your dog to the yard (away from yourselves and from the house where he is used to being). Yes, your dog is barking, digging, howling, and that is perfectly NORMAL for being in crisis!

*Most dog trainers will tell you, the hard part is not training the dogs, but in training the humans.*

Your dog is very lucky to have you. If your parents are not willing to change and insist on giving him away, then try to find someone for him who IS familiar with dog behaviour, so that this doesn't happen again.

All the very best.

Sweetie, What you all are doing is cruel to that animal.. You need to find it a home with someone who will love it and take care of it. You just put that dog in prison in the backyard all alone after being with the family for five years.

How would you like it if you folks decided that you had to be put out in the heat and cold in a prison? I do believe you would make noise too.

It is scared and afraid and you all have just dumped him.. You all should be ashamed of yourselves..

GIVE THAT DOG TO SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT THE HEALTH AND MENTAL BEING OF THAT ANIMAL..

You say you love it??? Then stop thinking about you and find that dog a forever home where he won`t be dumped in a prison to save the GRASS... You don`t deseve to have this animal or any other with that attitude.

When you decide to get an animal you take resposibility for that animal for life.. Five years is a short life.

I certainly hope you all don`t do that to Grandma or Grandpa when they become a problem... WOW...

GIVE THAT DOG AWAY. It is NOT used to the heat or the cold.. It is summer that little dude is out there in the heat, panting and digging up the GRASS trying to cool down...You lived with this dog five years and yet you know nothing about him or any dog... I just pray he don`t keel over in the heat from aheat stroke...

TSK TSK TSK.. What a shame... Next you all will throw a rope around his neck and tie him up..

AND WHY??? Because he is a dog, doing and acting like a dog....

GIVE THAT DOG AWAY... You will be doing him the biggest favor of his life...

OH,,,, PLEASE, PLEASE LET YOUR PARENTS READ THIS.. I AM DIRECTING AT THEM AS WELL.......................

Dogs are pack animals. You and your family are his pack. You have put him outside and he is lonely. His way of displaying his displeasure to you is to bark and tear up the yard. Spend more time with him, let him know that you still love him. He doesn't know why he must suddenly stay outside, but the transition is difficult for him.

why is it that he needs to be outside after 5 years? your best bet i think would be to talk to your vet or a trainer to help make the transition to outside easier on your dog... i know i would hate all of the sudden being told i have to sleep out in the cold rather than in a nice warm house with people

I would hate to have to give any of my animals away so you should not have to! Petsmart and petco give obediance classes and also you might want to check the dogs health at the vet. sometimes animals misbehave when they have a illness. Well good luck and to your doggie!

Your dog needs attention. he does not understand why he is caged up. i would spend time. with him. and take him for a long walk. and see if that helps. he feels like his pack abandoned him. try ever thing before giving him up. good luck to you both.
