Calling an exterminator would be the best solution obviously. However that can be extremely expensive and with a new baby it's very likely that you don't have the extra funds laying around. First thing you need to do is to buy some Capstar tablets and Frontline Plus for your cats. The Capstar will kill all the live fleas on your kitties. The Frontline will prevent the fleas from coming back for a month.
Next I would definitely bomb your house, and yard if your cats go outside. There are flea bombs on the market that leave no residue behind. You also need to vacuum daily for a few weeks, but throw the bag away after each time. If you don't, the eggs will hatch in the vacuum bag and sneak back into your carpet. You also need to vacuum couches, or anything cloth like where the fleas could hide or lay eggs.
After you bomb your house, it would also be a good idea to steam clean your carpets within a few days. I know it seems like a lot of work but flea infestation is terribly hard to get control of.

As an ex-vets wife...been there. If you seriously want to correct the problem for once and all. Take the pets to a kennel to be deflead. Have them treated with a monthly or longer flea prevent. Plan a trip to Grandmas or a hotel for at least 24 hours or longer with newborn. Bomb the house per instructions on cans by square footage. Ask someone to go in after that time and remove bombs and ventilate house thoroughly before re-entering. Keep pets treated and you should be fine. Good luck!

To get rid of the fleas you must use a fumigator and then do it again two weeks later.
DO NOT DO THIS WITH A NEW BORN BABY LIVING IN YOUR HOME!!!
Talk to your pediatrician. Fleas are not good for a newborn either. So you have to get rid of the fleas. But be EXTREMELY cautious about any sort of pesticide with young children, especially a new born.
Good luck.

well besides calling an exterminator. The best thing to do is to take the newborn to the babysitters for a day and start in the morning with bombing the house for fleas. But I would give the house an unusually long time to air out.

If you have pets, get them a spot on topical to kill fleas on them. I wouldn't use bug bombs with a new baby in the house. These bombs live a residue on things. Try this: vacuum the house, then sprinkle 20 Mule Team Borax on the carpet. The boric acid in it kills the fleas. Leave it in the carpet until the next time you vacuum. Then sprinkle again.

The best thing to do is bathe the kitten daily in luke warm water. Dry thoroughly and pick the darn things off as they hatch and develop. This takes patience, but there is an upside. The cat will learn to be handled and groomed and you will have a loving companion. Just be sure to be gentle, use a non-tearing shampoo like Johnson's baby shampoo and talk to the kitten the whole time.

GET rid of any pet food that you are leaving around in dog or cat dishes. Fleas breed in it. Clean up your pets.
Clean up everything, vacuum everything, including the upholstry.
There are some commercial sprays that will work, but you can try Pennroyal, a natural herb.

seven dust.
sprinkle on your floors keep it there for at least an hour and vaccum up completely. Keep the baby in a playpen or crib while doing this, but it doesnt really leave a scent, but will help on the fleas.

take and bomb your house first off. Another old wife's tale tip that I have used for years and KNOW that it works is clean your carpets with pine-sol ( not an off brand though) and mean green. It has formaldehyde in it and the fleas can't breath and eggs cant hatch.
