I'm not a big contest person. You really got to read the fine print in the rules to see if you retain the copyright to the image. They might require a photo release as well. Contests are really cheap ways for some companies to get art for little money. Now, that said, there is nothing wrong with entering if you understand the rules and have a great image you want to share. Just understand that you might be really selling yourself (and the image, short). I would suggest working to create a dozen images. Take a very critical approach to selecting the photos....are they sharp, is the color correct, do they have nice clean backgrounds with no distractions. When you get 12, try having them enlarged to 8x10's. Are they still sharp? Could a crop of the image improve the photo? Would the photo be better as a vertical image? Be your own worst critic. Shoot some more or re shoot the images and make any changes you feel would improve the photos. Then show them to a variety of people....not just your friends and family. Ask them what images they enjoy.....and why. After you get that done look around your area to see if there is any space that might want to display your work. There are several coffee houses in my area that put up art work on a monthly basis. They don't charge anything and even pass on any part of the sale. I've seen some nice work that was just mounted and matted and had shrink wrap to protect the surface. Then just sit and listen for comments. You get honest comments on the work.....sometimes brutal critiques. If you sell some great.....if not you've got something for you own walls or presents for friends.

If you enter in a contest, can they use your photos?
I entered some of mine at the county fair and won ribbons, and a little cash - great moral booster.
The best advice I heard was to move in closer to take a picture, and then move in closer yet.
