People who are at either end tend to be rude, because they think they are right and everyone else is wrong.

This is a really good question. I don't think that if a person believes that they are right, and therefore others are wrong, makes them rude or arrogant. It's more about how they present that belief. If they are pushy about their beliefs, then they're rude; if they treat others as if they are idiots for not believing the way they do, then they're arrogant. I've been through many religious beliefs and have found that a person can truly believe they have the one and only true path, and still not be rude or arrogant about it. I've also come across some people who claim to be open minded who were really quite prejudiced and rude when it came to those with religious faiths.
I think the key to harmony is not that you insist that everyone accept everyone else's beliefs, but that you respect the right for people to hold whatever beliefs they have without being discriminated against.
Personally, I get very tired of hearing the phrase "how can an intelligent person believe ..." Beliefs aren't usually based on facts, they are based on personal experience and spiritual drawing to or away from something. One person believes they have found the one and only truth, another person believes that all truths should be accepted. Both people have the right to live without harassment for their choices.
Just my thoughts...
Many Blessings,
Lilyth

Are you asking a real question, or chastizing us? People are rude for a variety of reasons, religion or lack of is often one of those reasons. What I find (and I could be wrong), is atheists tend to be the rude ones. They openly attack religion and call the religious insulting names. On the other hand, how often do you see Christians insulting Atheists? I mean really? The only things I've really seen christians say is something like non believers will not go to heaven, but thats about it. No such words like idiots, country hicks or such. Its is the atheists that see themselves as the all knowing humanists, the intellectuals, the elitists. They are above the dumb hay-seed right wing religious wackos. Yes, many of them say or write those things.
So, dont blame the religious before taking an honest look at who the rude ones actually are.
And BTW, jerks smile all the time. Remember Eddy Haskell on Leave it to Beaver? He was constantly grinning, while he lied, cheated and acted like a total jerk. There is a time and a place for smiling and consideration. If you see someone that is always smiling they must be up to something.

People are rude because people are rude. That's one of our flaws as human beings. Some people do seem to be making a profession out of it, but, what can you do. Let 'em live with it. They'll get tired of solitary confinement after losing whatever friends they might have had. You just go on being the good person you sound like you are, and let the world chose between the way you do things and the rude way. Have a great day, and God Bless you.

I don't think people mean to be rude. We just all get caught up with our lives and whatever crises we're going through. Stress just causes a person to focus on their own situation and makes them kind've selfish. Then after that particular crisis is over a person realizes that we need to care about other people just the same way we were cared about. Just a thought anyway.

It's a HUMAN thing, not a religious or non-religious thing.
I believed that all actions and inactions have its consequences. Even arrogance has its consequences. Not to say I am completely free of my arrogance---it rears its black head once in a while. ;-) So I stopped with the arrogant words long ago and started improving my self-esteem. :-) It works for me. :-)

Yes, I totally agree too. But being rude or arrogant has nothing to do with a person's religion.

Your question makes no sense. Is a person rude or arrogant if they are NOT religious or "atheistic"?

You must excuse the deeply devout, as their sense of right and wrong have dissipated in the face of their mantra-like rhetoric. They will often eschew reason as evil, and proclaim absurdities as categorical truths. This is symptomatic of a greater mental illness - a disconnection from reality that results in potentially psychotic and sociopathic behavior. There are more people who die in the name of God each year than who actually Live in the name of God.

Rude has nothing to do with one's belief system. It is a personality trait. Sadly enough, there is always "one in every crowd".
It can also have to do with perception of your upbringing...such as...I'm sure there are people in this world that would think it rude to use Princess Diana's nickname... ;)

Some definitely feel superior because of what they believe...I don't know why. Our belief influences our feelings and decisions towards one another. People acts on things that approves what they believe and will not do things that their religion disapproves.
To sum it up, what a person believes definitely influences how s/he reacts.
