I don't mean to sound ignorant in any way by asking this question, I mean I know that this condition/feeling of depression affects alot of us. I just wondered that, what, to you, defines depression?

Depression is a sad and hopeless feeling. Even if you win the lottery you would still be sad. Well maybe happy for a while. Paxil helped me. Been on it for 10 yrs now. But its still a daily struggle, I pray a lot and thats helps me thru the day. GOD BLESS YOU

Mild depression or occasional depression-- an attitude that " I don't feel like doing what I normally would like to do." is one of the most common conditions experienced by adults and young people. It is normal for someone to feel blue or have an attitude of melancholy from time to time due to undesirable situations. It is another thing to see a black cloud cast over the future. Some people actually develop a sort of regular "gloom and doom" attitude if depression is allowed to persist. Nutritional deficiencies or fast foods often provoke such feelings. Exposure to household chemicals and food additives may also contribute. Having a positive support group is of great benefit. Taking proper vitamins/minerals and drinking a proper amount of Pure water daily is important.Exercise of some sort (walking) is a great help. (I have a great resource about chemical free household products for the home, body and pets -- e-mail me at lbk_rvr@msn.com.) Sometimes depression is a spiritual condition caused by thinking wrong! Stinking Thinking! Have you ever noticed that you become depressed when you have been thinking about something sad,or a past event that you wish you could change? I am a firm believer that you are what you think! We are a 3 part being! We are a spirit -- we live in a body -- we have a soul (mind, will and emotions). There is a great book called The Battlefield of the Mind, by Joyce Meyer. You can go to her website and order it --It will change your life for the better! Go to www.joycemeyer.org and check it out!

It's a chemical unbalance in your system that does not allow you to cope with certain levels of unhappiness or reality. Your body is designed to release chemicals to help you feel better. When we are gitty like a school girl at an all boys concert it's because way too many endorphines (esp) were released into our brain. But when we get too down and can't seem to cheer up, it's because our body is no longer helping us feel happy. I don't think "pills" are the answer. There are many natural things that can help our body work the way it should like bee pollen and a good "pressure point" massage to get the blood flowing correctly. But hey I'm not a doctor so who knows.

Imagine getting up and having someone come and with powers putting a gravity field around you then they put more gravity field on you slowly pressing down and crusing you making in darn near impossible to get you then as you walk around this villan keeps reapplying the gravity field everwhere you go then he takes a fog and puts in your brain making concentration harder than normal. Every time you get up it is almost physically painfull andyou can feel the effects of your gravity prison making you sit back down and do nothing now imagine this life draining happening every day over and over. This is depression. This is my every day life I must deal with.

Have you ever wondered about the reason of our existence? Have you ever wondered why we die, and where we go after death? What will happen to us in the end? Have you ever asked yourself why God made the earth and all that is in it under man’s dominion? Why were the night and the day, and the sun and the moon created? What are we supposed to do during our lifetime? Were we created just to eat, drink, and enjoy ourselves before we die? As one poet put it:
“I do not know whence I have come.
I saw my feet walking on the road.
As they please I go and stop.
What am I doing here?
How did the road find me?
I do not know! I do not know! I do not know! ”

God has emphasized in many verses of the Qur’an that He did not create us without purpose. He said: “What! Do you think that I created you simply in jest? And that you would not be returned to Me?” (23:115) He also said: “What! Does man think that he will be left to roam at his will?” (75:36) In addition, He said: “Do people think that they will be left to say: “We believe,” and they will not be held accountable?” (29:2)
Indeed, God Has created human beings for a purpose and with a purpose: TO WORSHIP HIM ALONE (Monotheism). He said: “I have not created the Jinn and humankind except only to worship Me. I don't require provision or feeding from them. Surely Allah is the All-provider, the Possessor of all strength, the Firm.” (51:56-58) In fact, all prophets told their people to worship God alone (Monotheism) and shun worshipping His creation (Paganism). God said: “I assuredly sent among every people a messenger with the command: Worship Allah and avoid worshipping false gods.” (16:36)
Prophet Abraham, for example, believed in One God, who had no partner. Anyone who holds a different understanding of God than this has contradicted the religion of Abraham and follows falsehood. God says in the Qur’an: “Those who reject the religion of Abraham make fools of themselves.” (2:130)
Prophet Jesus was reported in the Gospels to have said: “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only’.” (Luke 4:8)
Prophet Jacob also said (in the Qur'an) to his people: “Indeed, those which you worship besides Allah are only names that you and your forefathers have established, for which Allah has sent down no authority. The command belongs only to Allah. He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the right religion, but most people do not understand.” (12:40)

Real happiness and peace can be ONLY found in submitting to the commands of the Creator and the Sustainer of this world. God has said in the Qur’an: (Truly, in remembering God do hearts find rest.)
(Qur’an, 13:28)

On the other hand, the one who turns away from the Qur’an will have a life of hardship in this world. God has said:
(But whoever turns away from the Qur’an, he will have a hard life, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment.) (Qur’an, 20:124)
This may explain why some people commit suicide while they enjoy the material comfort money can buy. For example, look at Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam), formerly a famous pop singer who used to earn sometimes more than $150,000 a night. After he converted to Islam, he found true happiness and peace, which he had not found in material success.

you are sad MOST of the time. and when you are sad (most of the time) EVERYTHING looks bad. for example: you get in a fight with your significant other and all of the sudden you convince yourself that NO ONE cares about you anyway, your mother, father, friends, children. and your job sucks, and their going to fire you, and so on.
every time you try to think of something good, your mind turns it into something aweful.
