Minature dachsund for small kids, terrier for older kids, beagle for all kids. DO NOT GET A YORKSHIRE TERRIER! THEY ARE MEAN ESPECIALLY AROUND KIDS!

I think that a lot of small dogs can get mean with the presence of small kids. I think its just intimidating for a little dog to be around kids that pick, poke, squish and pick up a little dog. I have noticed that small dogs in homes with kids can end up being pretty mean just trying to defend themselves from the kids who want to 'play' with them. I really suggest more of a medium size dog like an australian shepard. I have a an older medium sized dog that is a mutt that as a child I would rough house with and take on long walks in the desert, a catahoula x australian shepard mix that I take with me to work cows and a Jack Russel Terrier that I bought about a year ago. Both of my medium size dogs are good with kids and have never acted in away that would seem agressive, protective or fearfull but I think that my Australian Shepard mix is definately the best with kids. The smaller Jack Russel has shown a little agression because one the the boys playing with her got to rough and hurt her so she merely tried to protect herself. It was about 6 months ago and Ive never seen her do this again. My nephews (ages 1-6) can romp with my Shepard mix though and play with her for hours and she is very patient and gentle with them. She is big enough that the kids wont hurt her or give her a reason to be protective/agressive.
Shepards are known for being great with kids along with many other types of medium size dogs. The one draw back I have with my shepard mix is that she has a medium length coat and can shed alot. But, I live in Arizona so she is able to stay outdoors. Take into consideration shedding! It may not seem like a big deal now... but you'll get tired of hair on everything! Poodles and Shnauzers dont shed... in fact poodles are hypo alergenic. Also dachshunds seem to be good with kids but are prone to costly back problems later in life.

Not pomperanians. They bark too much. Beagles are good. Dashunds, also. Not toy dogs-too hyper and can get mean with all the pulling and poking from kids. A little bit bigger- labs or retrievers are the best.

I have a Lhasa Apso female and she is good with kids I would not recommend a male though they are more aggressive and a bit harder to train. also I am a dog walker and have come across other dogs that are good with kids cocker spaniels are good male or female. dachshunds are good as well male or female. those are the 3 I would most recommend.

I have a Rhodesian Ridgrabck and a 4 yrs-old daugther...and they get along very well.... but if youdont have the time to deal with a large breed, go for a smaller breed, I tried once with a Welsh Corgi and they were very nice and gentle

My brother and i grew up with 2 wired hair fox terriers. They both liked to take rides on our bikes and liked to ride on the motorcycle too. They both loved soccer, baseball and??? they are very energetic and playful. i also own a male yorkie and hes really not that fond of small kids?? i would go with the wired haired fox terrier.
