You can't put back spin on every chip shot. Most of the time it just helps the ball slow down, it's not going to back up. The most important thing is to make sure you accelerate through the shot. A short back swing with a good follow through will help. Remember if you slowing the club down or stopping right after you hit the ball it will not work. You must accelerate the club as it hits the ball. Once you get that down the harder you swing the more back spin.
The chip and run is the best shot to use when possible.

Assuming that you are using a "legal" iron, you must hit the ball first. Second, you must have a ball that will accept spin. In other words, don't think you're going to get any sort of "short game spin" using a distance ball. The pros spin the ball by crisply hitting a ball that spins like carzy. Yes, due to engineering design, materials, and manufacturing processes, some balls spin more than others.
Also, to maximize spin on the ball, one needs to hit the ball hard with the hands. That little snap at impact will make the ball dance on a receptive green.

-Put the ball back in your stance.
-Make sure that when you take the club away that you are not going away too flat. You want a fairly steep plane.
-Hit the ball like you are trying to mash it into the ground. This will create the "pinch" that you likely hear about.
-most importantly, accelerate through the shot. You're not trying for a full follow through, but if you slow down, you lessen the spin, and the ball won't check.
