I don't know what some of these guys are talking about, but my 11 month old female merle dane (Eva) is very energetic, and always wants to play with me. She is opposite with my wife though, but when she gets going she can really go crazy. Remember that Danes are big dogs from day 1 and having a 100 lb puppy crash around is crazy sometimes! But they are the best dogs in the world (BTW- Ridgebacks are not taller or heavier than a Dane), very gentle and great family dogs, plus they bark seldomly. Good luck!

When my son was growing up he brought a great dane pup home. We raised him out on a farm where he had lots of space to run and play. They are very large, gentle dogs. I can remember Jake sleeping with a kitten!

They have lots of energy, but are not hyper. Jake used to sit and watch TV with us. In spite of his size, he was never clumsy and didn't damage furniture or knock things off of tables. He responded well to commands and was very easy to train.

I don't know if Jake was the exception to the rule or not, but other Danes that I've observed since him seem to have the same characteristics. These are remarkable dogs and I highly recommend them (unless you live in a tiny apartment, lol).

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aULgv

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Great Danes are not hyper and not very active. On the list of highly active they are not there. They are low energy and are not big on running around and playing.
You need to be looking a hunting breeds they are very active or working breeds they are also very active. Herding breeds are hyper and active.
Look at border collies, visilas, weimaraners, huskys.
Look at www.akc.org and look up breeds you like it will give you detailed info on how active and general breed info.

Get a Great Dane, huge and playful,,but before that give a chance to a Rhodesian Ridgeback.... It is as tall as a Great Dane, much more heavier and very, very intelligent and playful... I have one and it is a good company for my daily jogging... also like to play very rough... it is not a retriver though, it like to play throw and catch... it is very obidient without takin any class...

Life expectancy of a Great Dane is very low (7-9 years) and expensive....

The Great Dane is a VERY smart and ADAPTABLE animal, Get the Female of the breed, not only will she be playful and great at Frisbee, she will be loyal and easily trained....she will be an awesome 'man's best friend' and you can call her your "b*tch" lol
(great dane's are horse-like-huge, don't teach her to jump on you, she might jump on somebody little and crush them.)

they have alot of enery like a lab but they are twice as big and like with any dog as they age they start to calm down. Your going to need a very big pooper scooper. good luck.
