I have a tortoiseshell cat, and most of them, since they're related to calicos, are females. When a male is born, supposedly it's sterile(unable to father kittens).

I have a male cat with 3 colours in the fur... when I got him, I did think he was female, but at the first vet visit, they told me he was male. He is soooo cute. I am so happy I saved him! :) He is one of the best cats I've ever owned!!!

It has to do with the X and Y chromosones of cats. Take a look here for a pretty good explanation.
