If you look in almost every interior decorating magazine, you will find every color of the rainbow and then some being used. The important thing is to not stay with the basic crayon colors, but look for fresh shades and hues of each color. Don't be afraid to use more than one color on a wall, or in a room. If you go with what's popular, you'll have a room like everyone elses. You can use some of the popular colors in your accents, but dare to set your own popular colors, and let others follow your trends. The best way to decide on what colors to use in a room are to find a piece of print fabric or a print pillow that you like, that has several colors in it. That will set the palette for your room colors. Pick one for the base color that is your walls, your backdrop. Pick your next two favorite colors from it, for your sofa and chair covers or upholstery, use the remaining colors for accents, pillows, curtains, table runners, or use the print you started with for the sofa and chair or for bedding and pull the other colors for pillow shams, dust ruffles, and valances. Citrus colors and tropical shades are great for a year round spring look of light and cheerfulness. Martha Stewart shades are just to the left or right of being too neon, and are more adaptable to many styles of decor from country, to classic, to victorian ,to contemporary. the Paint chips in the store also have swatches of other colors that go nicely with the Main color , taking all the guess work out of it for you. Or at least it gets you thinking in a way you didn't see color before. Check them out. The best way to try out colors to see if you can live with them, is to buy some poster paper in your local craft ,or dept store, buy small cans of a few colors you're interested in , paint each poster board a color, be sure to put two coats and let it dry between coats to get the true color. tack them each to a different wall in the same room. Each day look at how the light and shadows change the color throughout the day, and then the next day swap the colors to the other walls to see how they look throughout the day on the other walls. You will see if the other colors from surrounding wood and items changes the color, or clashes and if it's easy on your eyes or not. Be careful when using red and yellow, these are two very bright colors and tend to look two shades brighter when they are on the wall. And yellow is an extremely hard color to cover when repainting, it takes many coats of primer and color,to cover it.
