The universe is eternal and had no beginning and will not end.
The "big bang" theory does not claim the "big bang" created the universe, it claims the universe expands and collapses.
But, you are referring to our visible universe when it is most likely our visible universe is merely part of an infinite universe. Our visible universe is not the entire universe.
In any event, no credible theory claims the universe sprang into existence out of nothing.

this question has great ERROR. first of all big bang is not a theory,, it is a fact. and secondly
you cannot ask " what existed before big bang?
because
time starts with big bang.
and you cannot go "BEFORE" big bang because there is no past .
no time, no past.
Only God existed eternally, because He is eternal.

No theory answers the metaphysical question of "what was there before nothing" INCLUDING religion. The rather lame "God was there before nothing" or "God has always been" are simply a hiding place from reason IMHO.
I personally have no problem with matter having always been, if you want to believe there has always been a God then that is OK with me.
Peace out

Ah, I'm so bad with dates... the universe began 10 billion years ago... I think. It began with a gravitational singularity, from which all matter, energy and spacetime itself was created.
