We all believe in something. Atheists may think they are free minded but they are adhering to certain set of values. We need to choose what we believe and what we choose must be truthful and right. Just because we don't adhere to the popular culture, or the popular philosophy of our subculture does not mean that you have been brain washed. Is a "brainwashed" person actually breaking free from a certain value system and being chastised for it by the majority? If people say Christians are brainwashed, then you have to prove that what they believe in, the Bible is false.

Brainwashing is a form of psychological torture involving deprivatoin of food, water, sanitatoin, and sleep; isolatoin, forced labor, forced confessoins, beatings, etc. THis harsh treatment is alternated with periods of reprieve, when the subject is fed, allowed to bathe and rest, and treated with kindness and respect. This alternation leaves the subject even more disoriented. The intent is to break down the subject's attachment to all that is known and familiar, to force him to rely on his captors for even the most basic elements of life.
Brainwashing techniques were perfected by the Koreans and used on American soldiers during the Korean War, when the term passed into common usage. It is still used in prisoner of war camps thru out the world, to break down captured soldiers and make them divulge military informatoin and/or defect. Brainwashing can be resisted if one recognises the tactics and knows how to resist. As part of their training, soldiers are taught to recognise and resist brainwashing tactics.
Brainwashing is also used in some radical religious cults, this is how I know of it, as a survivor of such an experience. (The cult leader was of military background, this is how he knew the techniques.) Internally, the feeling is of fear, confusion, anger, a desire to please one's captors, a desire to kill one's captors, a desire to escape, even if by death, a desire to fully assimilate with one's captors and so end the torture that way, etc.
The word brainwashing is also used to mean the usual sort of social conditoining or training; those who use it this way have no idea what real brainwashing is like.

Agnostics believe in secret, mystical knowledge. St Thomas was an agnostic, so if he was a saint and one of Jesus' disciples, I guess by your logic Jesus brainwashed him. You think hanging around Jesus for three years and being one of the chosen 12 makes Thomas brainwashed, you idiot?

It's just like inbreeding, see... You don't know what hit you until you walk around the neighborhood a bit and find out that there's all kinds of OTHER possibilities after all.
Otherwise, you won't even be able to tell any different from what you've been limited to know anyway.
Peace be with you!
