I'm not sure if the explanation below applies to Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, but I can summarize Royler Gracie's explanation of why the gi is used in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The gi forces you to work on proper technique. It gives you and your sparring partner many more places to grab on to and forces you to be constantly aware of your posture and any openings you give up. It also gives you a consistently dry place to grab on to as you sparring partner begins to sweat, forcing them to be more technical with their escapes. Later, after developing an understanding of the basics, you can begin to add no gi practice into training.

I personally think Koral is really the best mid priced gi out there... But I like they way they fit me the most. The Gameness Pearl is the best bang for your buck IMO. Atama used to be THE brand, but have fallen off a bit. However they are still good. Below is a list of gi's I have owned or known people who owned and liked... Lucky Gi Gameness Venum Fuji Atama Ouano Howard Combat Kimonos Keiko Sport Krugans Also, if your going to put it in the dryer get white, otherwise the colors will fade really bad...

The gi is primarily used because that's how they compete in Brazil.
If you plan to fight MMA, the gi isn't as important but if you just plan on doing submission tournaments, then I would train with it. Beware, though, even though the gi can be used to your advantage, you can be choked out as well.

The gi is used for training coz it's the proper attire for training and it shows that u are a true practioner....u cnt just wear casual clothing for training, it's almost like golf, u wear a t-shirt with a collar and proper trousers on the golf course. U wear jeans, get kicked out to go and change.

To help in the practice of submission holds and chokes also the material when twisted torks the skin but overall for gripping and grabbing. Would you rather be grabed by the skin or the Gi?

It gives you better grip and it is easier to control your opponent also when you fight you sweat and it is harder to apply submissions.
