Humans invent Gods in their own images, primarily to help overcome the fear of the unknown (death). And, to help explain the unknown or unknowable (universe, eternity, weather, natural disasters, etc.)
God belief is based on fear. Nothing more nor less.
And, is the primary reason some God believers become angry, upset or violent if someone challenges their beliefs.

It's not a question of insecurity. It's a question of authority. Who is the author of all things? Whoever He is is important enough to acknowledge and pay attention to.
God has given everyone a will. So, everyone has the option to reject Him or believe Him. He does not want to force people to love Him, so He allows mankind to go his own way. He will not prevent the consequences which befall those who reject him. That's why the world is so messed up. Too many (the majority) have chosen to go their own way and look at what's happened. The world is an awful place to live in.
But there is hope in Jesus Christ. All who want to go God's way will be given eternal life in a utopia beyond our imagination. It will be the real life that everyone is always looking for but never finding. It is for all those who decide to acknowledge God.
So, are we insecure as a race without God? You bet. Those who acknowledge Him are the only ones are AREN'T insecure. That's the secret. Your friend has it backwards.

It's not always about need.
For me, and many people I know, we believe in a divine being or beings because our experiences have led us to have no doubt about his/her/its/their existence.
There is a difference between believing in the Divine and depending on divine intervention. I go through life, dealing with the world as it comes, and saying thanks for the occasional insight or coincidence that the Universe sends my way. But my life is constructed according to my choices, not divine demand.
My own beliefs also include many other levels of reality, and the concept of reincarnation. So Heaven is not someplace I go when I die, but rather one of many places I can take spiritual vacations in between cycles.
There are some people, and some religions, whose lives are dictated by what they believe God has commanded. And they believe in a single afterlife, determined based on how closely they follow those commands. That's their choice.
My personal beliefs happen to be different, but that doesn't mean I don't respect and support other people's beliefs.
I think the biggest problem with religion, and with the belief in god, comes when people fall into the trap of thinking there is only One True Way [tm] that everyone must follow. That leads to intolerance, and prejudice, and conflict.
Belief in the divine itself is not a problem. Hating someone because they don't share your beliefs is.
{Edit:} Agreed, some people do "need" god because they don't have their own inner strength or sense of direction or whatever. Dependence is not inherently a bad thing either. We all depend on water and air, but that doesn't mean those are bad.
Dependence and need can be bad, however, when we take any difference or disagreement as a threat or challenge to our beliefs. That is the insecurity that I think you are referring to, and I agree that it is a problem because it leads to intolerance of differences.
Some people lean on the idea of god the way some people use aspirin for a headache. It's an aid, something to get them through the rough spots. And that's not a bad thing either. But in each case, becoming dependent to the point of not being able to function has turned that aid into an addiction. And when our addictions are challenged or threatened, we get defensive. Which brings us back to threat, conflict and intolerance.
So, as with most things, a deep faith in god is like most other relationships or interactions. They can be good and beneficial, or self-destructive and limiting, depending on how we use them.

What's insecure about wanting something better that this sometimes miserable, corrupt, mess we call life? I refuse to believe that this is all there is..and if having as much faith as a grain of mustard seed is all that is required of me, then i'd rather live as if there were a God and find out i am right, than to live as if there isn't one and find out im wrong..think about it..and either way, believer or not, we still have to live while we are here..together..
