because religion is a drug used to control the unthinking masses, thought up rules made by man to control man, look at the devision and wars it causes and its clear that religion was not introduced divinely,we need more catholics in third century bc. ok we'll tell them its a sin to use contraception-- etc. if the devil punishes sinners in hell does that mean he's doing good ? god is love ,not war,god loves everyone not just one brand or another, god is with you always wether you adress him/her as allah, budda, jesus or whatever its ,a rose by any other name is still a rose, all these things were written so long ago and altered to suit whomsoever was weilding the power at the time, if a god preaches war then hes a man,we all know in our hearts whats right or wrong, your concience is your im comunicator trust it.x

It was indeed Karl Marx, and the phrase is actually "Religion is the opiate of the people"... and even that is a translation. Wikipedia has an excellent article that gives you the context of the quote. There's nothing devilish about it. :)

No, it was Karl Marx, he said "organised religion is the opium of the masses". The point he was making was that people use religion to escape from reality, like a hallucinogenic drug.

karl marx did i believe and if you were to "assume" religion is false for a moment and look at how the world works you would see what he meant by it.
