As most of foreign tourists owning properties in Florida, my brother was used to drive the family's car while he visited from abroad. I wanted to know if he can still drive our car as opposed to drive a rented car. He is a national from Venezuela and comes to Florida twice a year staying at his own place. If he is stopped by Law Enforcement or is involved in an accident will my insurance be valid? Is he violating the law if he drives a private vehicle? What are the legal consequences in South Florida?

He must apply for an international license in his country before he comes to the states. His license is not valid in the uSA if he does not do this 1st. Your insurance will be dropped or cancelled and you will be held responsible for any damages he incurrs in an accident.

It varies from country to country. When I was on vacation in America from England they accepted a UK driver's license. You should ALWAYS check with your insurance company though because they will have restrictions. It's better to check now, rather than find out the hard way.

I would also call your DMV to ask them which foreign drivers licenses are acceptable. Consider also an international drivers license that translates the license into English.

Check with your local DMV (department of motor vehicles) but my thinking is he needs a valid driver's license from somewhere in order to be legal to drive - as long as he has a legal driver's license from somewhere he should be ok - you would need to check with your insurance agent as to whether or not they would cover in case of an accident with that type of situation - but if he can rent a car with his Venezuelan driver's license then he should be ok driving your vehicle but check to be sure - Good Luck and have a good visit with him regardless -

I go and visit europe all the time...so here is what you tell him to do...go to his dmv (in his country) and they will give him an international license that can last for 3 months...its very cheap and if he has a license from his country he just has to go get an international license and it will count...and yes he will be able to drive your car...and your insurance will be valid...but you will have to call your insurance and tell them that you allow him to drive your car...he has to have a written consent with him at all times...
