The most consistent way to initiate a back swing is to keep two key thoughts in mind:

-Low and slow. In other words, don't rush the takeaway, and keep the clubhead low for the first 12 to 18 inches.

-One piece takeaway. At address, you can see that your arms and shoulders make a triangle. Try to keep that triangle together until your club is at about 45 degrees. From that point, your back arm (the right if you are a right handed player) will have to fold.

I find this to be a really consistent way to keep your swing on plane and in the proper positions right to the top.
