Penicillin has probably saved the most lives, but its overuse has led to antibiotic resistent bacteria that may be a problem in the future. Still, it's done a heck of a lot of good.

Widespread immunisation has completely changed society. Now that you are not likely to lose most of your children to any of:
measles
diphtheria
tetanus
pneumonia
pertussis ("whooping cough")
mumps
rubella
etc...
people can choose to have just one or 2 babies, and be reasonably confident of raising them.
This led to many sociological changes, including a demand for reliable contraception.
To see what I mean, compare places where child mortality is high. Women there want many babies, so they can raise at least one or 2. Then, they cannot afford to educate many; that leads to poverty, as does the waste of lives of children dying young.
Aid agencies say that many Palestinian women changed back to that strategy, when it seemed as if their children were more likely to die in the violent clashes with Israeli forces.
