While I was driving into work this morning, I got to thinking about how the Black slaves were forbidden to learn how to read. It stands to reason that if the Mexican people are being prevented from learning English, that only opens them up to slave labor. When I say prevented, I mean they don't have to learn English because everything is done for them in Spanish. I am not trying to be racial here, I am serious. I live in a large hispanic and asian area. All the signs and stores, even the library caters to the Spanish speakers. Yet the asians speak fluent English. Why? Because they have to. They are brilliant students too. Why are the Mexicans being held back? Does anyone see my point?

I see your point. I think that the worst phrase ever created was "politically correct". That phrase allows for any group of any kind to claim bias. I know you are saying that the Mexicans are being held back, but I think they are winning. They have made an effort to infiltrate this country and breed. They are winning when our country is catering to their goal. There are many Mexican activists that will plainly state that the goal of our southern neighbors is to take California.

I think it is because the Mexican immigrants, especially the illegal ones, are poor. If they had money they could afford good schools and neighborhoods to live in where there are less drugs and lower crime rates which would otherwise act as distractions from school work and learning English. The reason for Asians to be better in school work and learning English is that to come to America from the other side of the world you need to have money in the first place to do that and you can't get in illegally, and another thing is that it is part of their culture to do well and study hard for school. But to come to America from Mexico it is cheap and easy to get into America illegally which means the illegals could easily end up in bad neighborhoods and never do well.

You have a very good point here. I'm guessing you live somewhere in Cali or somwhere. Well, i heard from a true-citizen from Central America that he doesnt like the english language and thats why he doesnt want to learn it. Some hispanic people have cultural barries. They dont want to learn the language sometimes...i know you might think its stupid...(me too *no ofence to any1* They want to keep their own culture intact. Althought, various mexicans are being held back by themselves due to this unique way of thinking about their culture, there are many who want to learn English to succeed in the U.S.A.

Who's preventing them from learning English? How many more ESL classes do we have to offer them for FREE? The signs in both languages are offered as a courtesy. I'm sure if the signs were only in English, you'd probably say how intollerant everyone was!

Yes, that is very true! One reason could of course be that since the corporations who employ illegal immigrants don't care one way or another, and since a vast number of the illegals who are here don't intend to become American citizens anyway (why should they? They get everything the want anyway, including the right not to learn English), I don't see that that will change in a hurry ....

Education is why.... because in most Asian countries English is a requirement in school, starting as early as elementary. Hispanics, referring to Mexico, they were not given that education. Education in Mexico, unless your family is wealthy, is non-existent. It's a lot easier to learn English at a young age and remember it when you become an adult, than it is for an adult to learn English.

I do understand what you are trying to say but at what point do people want to do something bad enough that they take it upon themselves to do it. I could blame the Government/big business for all of my problems but that doesn't solve my problems. If I want or need something bad enough I will figure out how to accomplish that. I get real tired of hearing people say that "well I'm a criminal because my parents didn't love me when I was a kid" and they are 40 years old. At some point you have to take responsibility.

They aren't prevented from learning English; they are REFUSING to learn English.

Well it doesn't take a rocket-scientist to see that the Big Business exploits and wants to keep oppressed immigrant workers due to low wage cost.
