Tiger Woods

The Sony World Rankings, that show steady performance over a three year period, with weight placed upon the current year's events, shows that Tiger is still #1. The top 5 at the moment:

1 Tiger Woods 16.53
2 Phil Mickelson 9.44
3 Vijay Singh 8.46
4 Retief Goosen 7.99
5 Jim Furyk 6.37

Tiger is currently dominant. Even with his layoff, he still has a strong grip on #1. However, Phil Mickelson's consistency and stellar play in majors has helped him get to his career best ranking. Should he win (the US Open) today, Tiger (and #1!) will be in range.

Tiger won two majors last year and is still the reigning British Open Champion. Phil is the reigning champion in two majors and has a great chance to win the US Open.

But, the saying goes in boxing, and holds true elsewhere, "you have to knock the champion out."

Phil's play has to continue in this way, and at some point, when Tiger is playing well again, Phil will have to face him down and win (not so easy! ask any pro!). If he does, he's the champ.

Until then, the best golfer in the world is Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods has been the world #1 golfer for 2 years since he re-took the throne from Vijay Singh. before that he was ranked #1 in the world for 3 years after he took the throne from David Duval. Tiger has won all of the majors several times and wins about 1 of every 4.5 tournaments he enters. Clearly Tiger is dominant and arguably the best golfer ever (Jack Nicklaus).

Phil Mickelson should be the current #1 because he has won the last two majors and he is closing in on a third in a row.

Tiger Woods is #1 until someone de-thrones him. seems likely now that he is not in the final rounds of the US OPEN.

Tiger's game is a little rusty, but he's still the man.
