You should be glad he actually wants to be involved in church. Not all priests are pedophiles. Being an alter boy doesn't necessarily mean he's going to get molested. IF that is what you are concerned about. If you're worried he might get some religion, then you have problems. Don't prevent him from going to church. Prevent him from going on dirty websites, smoking, drinking, sex, stuff like that, that you KNOW will lead somewhere bad.

Why not do some quiet checking before you make a chiseled-in-stone command?
Ask the parents of current altar boys at your parish. Have they noticed anything untoward in the priest's behavior toward their sons? Or any changes in the boys' personality, as in becoming reclusive, timid, or perhaps more aggressive?
If all looks well, then allow the young man to serve the Lord. Remember, the percentage of pedophilic priests is the same as the percentage of pedophilic males in the laity, less than 1%.
The chances that your treasured son will be a victim are very remote.

Let him be an alter boy. Wat are you worried about that he may read the Bible? Oh that could be terrible. Or that he might want to become a Priest? At least it's not a bank robber. Or may be that he might enjoy going to church? If you are worried about anything more harmful than that then go to church with him and get to know your preist and spend time with your son. Also ask others in your parrish about the priest.

There's nothing at all for you to worry about...
Being a tailor's apprentice can only lead to suits with clean lines that are well-fitted...
However, if you meant ALTAR boy, then you may have something to be concerned about as the experience may, indeed, 'alter' him...
[For a good, honest and sincere answer, Granny Annie's response has my vote]...;-)

Well don't keep him from church, that's a good thing. As for an alter boy, he's gotta go to church first and see if he's still interested.

If you keep him from going to church, how is he supposed to learn how to spike holy water with laxatives and exclaim during a sermon "MOM, DID YOU KNOW THAT MAN ISN'T WEARING ANYTHING ELSE UNDER THAT ROBE?" As for the alter boy part just explain to him he'll be doing slave labor. No money, no interest. I'm going to hell for this.

no. you need to let your kids express themselves and try and help them reach their dreams, their goals, as long as there are good intentions. I mean, if your kid wanted to be a murderer, I could see you not supporting him. but this is about your son, not you. that is who comes first, and if it's really what he wants, I say help him do it. you may be worried what might come of it, but there are many things he could decide to do and it wouldn't stop you from worrying. like if one day he wanted to be a cop or a firefighter. in life, there will always be risks. and you can't shelter your kids just because you're afraid of the ifs. kids need to be able to know about the possibilities in life, good and bad. they need to be prepared for the real world. if you hide them because you're too scared or afraid of what might happen, then they will just end up learning the hard way. it's better to help them and be open about it than to hide it away and they have no clue. it will just be worse in the long run.
