maybe as an evolutionary survival mechanism? because the only other irrational thing humans consistently believe in is love (romantic) which i would guess has evolutionary origins too...

guess some people choose to ignore the fact that evolution exists and happened with us...my fault i suppose for putting this under religion instead of science :)

Religion is another form of population control. Why do you think it has rules? Because it was created by man. Your telling me that a “God”, who has the power to make the entire Universe sat down and thought of ten commandments for us to follow so we could eventually get into heaven… Why would Someone that has that much power care if you slept with your neighbors wife?

Just like the Government, Religion tells you what you can’t and can do. And when that fails they'll impose a new form of control.

This is a great question indeed

Physical evolution may have been ended, but the mental evolution has just started a few thousand years ago

So people chose a faith as per their mental evolutionary stage.

Those who stil have animal insticts left- follow such faiths which fits their animal tastes (sex or violence)

so a person choice of religion/faith can tell about his mental state

It is human nature to want to feel that there is something bigger than us helping us, guiding us, etc. Also it is human nature to want to believe that there is something beyond death of the physical body.

If you look at all the religions throughout time they have both of those beliefs in common - although other things may vary.

To me that means that those two beliefs are true because they began somewhere and had enough validity to be believed after all this time.

Man (mankind) was made to worship God. He actually did wire us to have this within our being. He created us in the image and likenes of Himself. He gave us spirit, soul, and body. A community unto itself. Just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are self existent community unto Himself. God is LOVE. Therefore, we worship Him because He first Loved us!

Problem is that mankind gets duped into believing false forms of worship. This is where idolatry comes from. When mankind seeks to worship creation, rather than the Creator. Evolution has nothing to do with it at all.

Religion is the lullaby used to calm our fears of death. It forces you to accept your lot in life in return for eternal life. As long as you give thanks and don't ask too many questions. It was created by the very rich and powerful as a means to control the masses "The meek shall inherit the earth", super, what in the hell good is it now that we're dead? Don't think it is a means to control the masses? They're outnumbered 100,000 to one and would be easily defeated in an uprising.

I think we're pre-wired to justify our existence by some means or another... Believing in a God gives a false meaning and worth to our lives... It lets people believe that we are better than the ants which crawl at our feet, and every other life in the universe.

That's possible, but I think it has more to do with how we're raised and who we hang out with. Like if you lived in a place where no one had any religion - you wouldn't know about it.

The idea of right and wrong does still work in cultures who do not follow religion.

No, our brains are wired to seek answers and protect those we are close to. Religion (Such as Judaism and chritianity) solved two problems: It answered all unaswerable questions and it controlled people by forcing them to lead better lives with the fear of hell.

We are social animals, and I think we are pre-wired to to live in the equivalent of dog packs. Just like dog packs, we have our "alpha" equivalents, which we follow religiously (sorry!).

I think that the majority of us are pre-wired to follow - that is the issue. The problem comes in our knowledge base and deciding what is worthy of following.

No we are created, not evolved, with a need, a void in our lives that can only be filled by Jesus Christ...some try to fill it with other things like Drugs, Alcohol, fornication, food violence and even religon, not Jesus but by trying to be morally good. this will not fill the void you are still miserable when you get down to it
