the refusal to assimilate; why should we bend over backwards to accommodate foreigners? no other country does that---and the whole illegal entry factor; it's not hard to get into this country, all we ask is that you pay your money and go through the established procedures; sure that could take a while but SO WHAT! lots of people have done that for a long time and effectively earned the right to live and work here. unfortunately i have had experiences like this and it really toasts my waffle! why should citizens of this great nation have to be subjected to such frustration! i don't remember reading that amendment in the Constitution...

Yes, but I know enough Spanish to where it is not a difficulty for me. Most of the products I buy are in both languages anyway. My biggest pet peeve is not the shopping but the forcing of spanish on Americans. I speak German fluently and I am learning Spanish, but I am not fluent yet by any means. As a legal student looking for part time work, what I hate is that I am not fluent in Spanish but people will be hired that speak almost no English, only Spanish and seem to have no desire to learn any English. I hate seeing certain job postings that say "must be native speaker of Spanish." Even when I become fluent, I will never be a native speaker of Spanish. And then I hear people yelling at Americans who have families to feed and at the same time must adjust to people who have no respect or regard for our culture or laws.

Although my understanding of Spanish is quite good, having been married to two Latinas for a combined 17-years, the biggest problem I see is that by accommodating those who don't know English in this manner, it only serves to further discourage them from learning the language and properly assimilating. (Also a bit of an insult to all of the other foreign nationals who speak a language other than Spanish!)

One of the biggest problems I have seen is trying to talk to someone on the phone, that is trying to speck English with an accent so heavy that we have problems understanding each other. Sometimes I have to ask for someone else, or I'll just hang up, try again and hope I get someone that speaks and understands English. I wonder how these folks get hired to do this kind of work..
Also dialing 1 for English . This is America we shouldn't have to do that. You go to any other country you don't have that option. I know, I lived and worked in Europe and if you didn't know their language you were just S.O.L. I learned their language. I didn't expect them to learn mine. After all I was in their country and I respected that.
Everything should also be printed in English only. It makes me so upset now to pick up something at the store and I can't understand the writing on it.. Its ridiculous.

The hell with learning Spanish. Lets all learn Polish, Germany, Italian. Most of these people came over here to the USA legally and don't try to put their language on the American speaking people. When in America speak English the language officially here and when in Mexico or other countries speak their language. When you are at home or among your nationally speak what ever you please but don't be ignorant and speak a language that others do not understand.

When I used my pregnancy test when I was pregnant with my daughter over 10 years ago, the instructions were all in Spanish. Had I not used a pregnancy test before, I would've not been able to use it.
It's even worse now. Now there's Spanish on just about everything. Another culture and language is being forced down our throats.

I've experienced what you have too, and it just makes be so angry! There are too many items now with both languages printed on them, I've bought the wrong thing more than once and wanted to call and scream at the manufacturer that this is America! Now, I just don't buy those products. Believe it or not quite a few smaller companies have not gone to both languages, so I support them.

No I did not have this experience. I have no problems with Spanish as a second language. We should all know at least 2 languages. I know 5 and proud of it.

this is a different one... i get upset with fellow english only speakers who are so inscure that they think every one who is speaking spanish must be talking about them. i wish people would not get so caught up in the fact that they can't understand. you can tell if someone is saying things about you or not by the general body language, facial expressions, and eye contact. even if they are, they might be saying somthing nice, and that's easy to figure out too, via the same formula, plus emotional tone in the voice. we need to quit being sooo insecure and trust our instincts!!

English should be the national language of the US. Pretty much everyone who comes to this country leagally must know english (or at least be able to answer the set questions in english).
Different groups only speaking their own language will cause division in the US. Sepatarte languages is nearly causing Canada to split. It is good to learn other languages but countries should and must have one national language.
