well it depends on why u need to goto safe mode since thats only used if u have a problem installing software, or hardware install issue.
to get into safe there is a few ways to access safe mode yes u r part right.
just before the first screen press and tap f8 key and it will give u a menu system choose safe mode and the enter, this can be done using the arrow keys.

The best thing for you to do is, when the screen is booting up....press the F8 key and keep tapping at it. This should bring u the *safe mode*. BUT hopefully you are not having troubles because you should NOT need to enter that mode of the computer unless you are having problems and need to * set program defults*

I have a problem myself sometimes with this...
I was round my mates place tonight and we had to start in safe mode....
But it wouldn't work with the 'F' buttons...
Look as the computer starts and it could be possible there is a message at startup (very small) left hand side of screen which says something like 'click escape'
Mate has a laptop running XP and this was the first time I came across it.

It F8 for sure, just keep hitting repeatedly as it boots up. Don't stop until you hear a beep, then the safe mode will appear.

keep pushing them.
Also go into start-control panel-system-advanced-startup.
Where it says time for start up options or similar tick the boxes and give some time... That may get it up.
and keep pressing f8

mk you need to push it throughout the whole startup because some computers have different times of when the button works
if that doesn't work then maybe go to the website of your computer maker and look for your computer model and try to find your answer there.
