It is not Da Vinci because when translated, that means "of Vinci"(Vinci was the place where Leonaro grew up).

Leonardo IS the first name. DaVinci is the last. Many Italian names have "Da" or "De" in front of them, it is like English names like London or York, we just left off the "Of". Leonardo was illegitimate, and in those days the illegitimate did not take their Moms names, they could not take their Dads, so they generally took place names.

It would be Leonardo Da Vinci, his first and last name in order.

I'll guess this is because of the era he lived in, it could very well have been a common name.

Leonardo was his "first" name, as we use names today in America. "Da Vinci" does indeed mean "from (or 'of') Vinci", which is a small town outside of Florence. Leonardo from Vinci is basically what his name means. In fact, his full name was Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, meaning roughly, Leonardo sired by Piero (his father) from Vinci. (I am puzzled how you could translate "da Vinci" but not know that "Leonardo" is a first name.)
