As a 19 year old girl who is obsessed with the gadget life, I am going to have a diffrent outlook on things like that.

To understand me, you need to understand my peers. We all have an mp3 player, although no one cares what type you have. You can have a128MB one that only works when you put it in one place, or you can have the new 60GB iPod, but no one cares. Of course you get more "Oh thats nice"'s when you have something newer or more expensive, but thats about it. We are more into buying gadgets to support our beefed up computers and laptops instead of showing off. For example, if you have a computer with 80GB of memory, you are allowed to have a 4GB flash drive, but otherwise you are just showing off. Get what I mean now? You should have flashy gadgets to enhance your computer, not to show it off. Its kinda like if you were to buy a 200 dollar dress, and 100 dollar shoes. The dress is the thing that you want everyone to look at, but you want the shoes to show how important the dress is to you.

So now that you understand why we get gadgets, I will explain the diffrence between my group of friends and most other people.

Most people who need the latest mp3 player, and the latest of everything that they can find if its considered "cool" now are the people who actually dont know all that much about computers or technology in general. However, if something is cool and new, it must be good so you invest the money in it to buy that product. And because now everyone must have everything, people who dont know much about technology must have everything.

With my group of friends (the nerdy tech freaks) understand that if you are going to invest in something, you better know how it works, otherwise you just waisted money on something stupid. For us, it isnt what is out on the market that is cool, it is what most people dont know what is out that is so cool to us. Simply the sound of GeForce can bring my friends orgasms, and we sit around showing our friends how extremely impressive what we just got is. When my friend got a new laptop that was just so amazing, we had a huge drinking party and we all took turns playing WOW on it. So for us, it is more about high quality no matter what the name is. Of course, we tend to stick to a product that we know well and buy all the same things from them, but no one cares if you buy the latest thing on the comericals.

I think it is stupid to buy the coolest things on the market. For example, the new iPods are a peice of sh*t. In fact, only one version of the iPod minis are not a peice of sh*t, but everyone needs one because of how nifty they are. Creative makes much better quality mp3 players overall, but no one cares about that because iPods look cuter. I admit that a micro is perfect for someone who works out a lot because of how convient it is to use while doing anything, but dont get a micro just because it looks cool. I think everyone needs to find a product that fits their personal needs, not what is new on the market today.

As a teenager myself, I can see how they would want the latest gadgets. But I can also see the adult's view on it. As an adult I think they're job is to enforce the fact that money doesn't come easy. You need to tell your kid(s) about how they should wait for the gadgets' prices to go down and they should wait a few more years. If you explain how you only have so much money and cannot speand it on a cellphone, ect. then maybe they will understand.

Keep in mind though that some teens are like stubborn mules and still won't understand. But at least you tried. :)

I just recently bought an mp3 player. FOR MYSELF. I am 29, and there is no way that I would fork out $300 for my child who could just as easy get a $10 CD walk man. There is no need for it. People need to tell their kids HELL NO!! when it comes to buying them. They are not responsible, they think they deserve this. It teaches them that they don't have to work for what they want. If my kids want something they can save up for it. That way they know the value of a dollar, and they will keep much better care of it.

I love gadgets myself.
It is perfectly fine as long as they can afford it.
Appreciate the money earned to spend on the gadgets..
Or at least appreciate those who lavish the gadgets on them.

Either work for it.
or..
Come up with a 'reward' system

There is good and bad.
The good points are very strong: the internet, computing power, etc.
But, they also can be serious time wasters.
It demands more restraint.
