I don't allow my employees to put out a tip cup. I think that it's ridiculous to expect a tip for working a counter!
I pay well and maybe that's why I don't see a point to tipping a counter person for anything beyond everyday, expected service.
If you have a sit down (food served to your table) establishment, then okay.
I happen to know that places like Starbuck's pay extremely well, and offers their employees (even part-time) low cost health care. So, no, I don't feel that their job is anymore demanding and tip worthy than a guy at McDonald's.

Yes. They receive very low pay and are in the service industry. The tips are completely optional and not expected as they are in a sit down restaurant where the current minimum standard for tipping is 18%. If the staff getting you donuts or your bagel are friendly and helpful, toss some change in the cup. Even if its a dime. With the volume of customers, if everyone tossed in a dime it would have a big impact on their take home revenue.

I purchased a pump and set up bath tub that I can load on my trailer. I go to the local corner and put my sign up Dog Dipping and its' free. I also set up a tip jar if they want to tip.
I get my local permit from town and guess what I make bewteen 100 and 300 a dollars every weekend doing this. Some local Vetenarians claim I am stealing their business, but this is a free Country and I am perfectly legal doing it. I have a long line of dogs every Saturday except today. I had other things to do, but next week I'll be out there again and making extra cash. It's fun and rewading.

I never place a tip in those cups unless the people behind the counter do something extra for me. If they're just taking my order, and filling it by sticking the items in a sack or cup, they don't get a tip. These people get at least minimum wage.
In restaurants with sit-down service, the waitstaff usually gets paid under minimum wage, and tips are expected to make up the difference between their wage and at least minimum wage. They get tips. (Unless the service is really bad.)

Yes, I think they are a good idea. I think if the workers know it's there it is a little extra incentive to prepare your order quickly and accurately. And if you are a repeat customer who regularly leaves a tip, no matter the amount, as long as it's not insulting, you should be getting great service.

I tip for service - good service. I do not tip for cashiering, whether the cashier is grabbing a pack of gum off the shelf for me, or grabbing a couple of doughnuts off the shelf for me.
I do not tip Subway employees even thought they "work with you as a sandwich artist to create your very personal masterpiece" for the same reason I don't tip the Burger King cook who creates my burger behind the line.

I don't tip unless I get table service or some special consideration. If they have to get me something or I have a special request, I will tip. Otherwise, no.

Absolutely not. They are paid minimum wage or more (not less than minimum wage, like waitstaff), so I feel as though they are adequately compensated.
