They can swim but most cats don't like to be wet. Having said that, I used to have a cat who loved the water and would get in the shower or bathtub with me!

All cats can swim, and many are excellent fishermen. The ancient Egyptians used cats not only as hunters of mice but as catchers of fish as well. Some cats can and do swim for pleasure, and some--especially the tiger--can swim for long distances. Many cats, however, avoid water and will take to it only as a last resort when there is no other means of escape from a threatening enemy.

Turkish Van cats aren't the only ones who enjoy swimming, as far as house cats go. I had two Siamese cats that just loved to swim with us in the lakes in the mountains (they also loved a good ride in the car). They went everywhere with us. There are many Siamese that love to swim (most don't). My sister had one that loved to swim as well, and then there was that movie cat in the Incredible Journey who really was a swimmer (Siamese as well). I've had some friends whose Siamese liked to swim, too. I've only seen one Tabby that likes it. Most cats hate the water, and the ones that don't are few and far between. They will, and can swim very well if they have to, but it takes two people to give most of them a good flea bath if you don't want to get all scratched up! LOL

Although most cats don't like getting wet they can still swim.

Some cat breeds, such as the Turkish Van, enjoy swimming.

yes cats can swim and not all cats hate water. it's been my experience that bad experiences with water are what make them hate it-we had a cat that used to climb in tub or shower with you when you bathed and if you didn't let him in he'd sit and cry and howl, of course i had been bathing him from 3 weeks old though

Yes! We live on our sailboat with two cats. One of them likes to jump from the boat over to the dock once in a while. Twice, she has missed the boat (no pun intended) when she has tried to jump back onto the boat. It is about 3 feet up from the water to the dock. Don't ask me how, but she has not only been able to SWIM, but somehow, she has been able to get herself back up onto the dock!
Also, my husband used to have a cat that LOVED to sit on the top step of his hot tub, with water up to her chest! She REALLY loved the rain, too!

Yes they can. Some actually like it, the Turkish Van and some Abbisinians, but don't take it for granted, 99.99% of cats hate water.
