they have special nets and equipement that only allows tuna to get trapped, not dolphins. and if by some odd chance one does get caught, they immediately let it go. they always are checking the nets while in the water to make sure no dolphins are trapped.

Because tuna is caught in a huge net , and sometimes dolphins get trapped in there too. Some companies used to whack the dolphins or hurt and kill them as part of the process, so when you see that "dolphin Friendly" label, the manufacturer is letting you know that they don't harm dolphins when catching tuna.

The tuna is harvested using methods and equipment that do not trap dolphins in the nets. Dolphins frequently swim with schools of tuna.

Not really. The current president lowered the standards for what dolphin safe now means. Now you have to kill under a certain amount of dolphins and use nets where the dolphin has a chance to escape but if they snag a dolphin in it and kill it it still is considered dolphin safe.

Sounds fishy. Do they really says that?
Now it really feels weird to look at a tune can. I'll take a second look.
The first thought that came by my mind is such that the can of fish meat conprises dolphin meat too. eww..
