The recipe isn't that important. It is the procedure that matters. Get a good book on the subject and study it. I have about 15 books on the subject and have read several more than once and one at least 4 times. Believe it or not I keep learning every time I read one. Dave Miller's Hombrewing guide is the best and the one I read 4 times not counting the times I used it as a guide while brewing. Charlie Papazian is a good author also but I do not think that he is as informative as Dave is. The time you spend with these books will be very rewarding. It will save you much grief in the future.

Lighter beers can be brewed and ready to serve in a week, but that is assuming you have a keg and co2 to force carbonate. Check out brew your own magazine's article on "grain to glass in a week."

1. brew a low gravity (low alcohol) brew
2. use a lot of yeast, preferably use a starter or you can just use several packets of yeast
3. brew at the higher temperature range of the yeast's tolerance.
4. siphon to keg, hook up co2 at 30psi and wait a couple days.
5. chill, serve

In reality, the previous poster was right: budget 6 weeks. If you can't force carbonate you have to bottle condition the beer for a week or two to get natural carbonation.

There is a company called williams brewing they have a catalog of brewing equipment and ingredients that can also be viewed online. however, you'll never make real beer in a week, at minimum it takes 6-8. unless you're trying to make meade, or strait swill.

You need to buy certain ingredients that only a brewing supply place would carry. Try this website, they have everything you can possibly need and the prices are good.

considering it takes about 6 weeks to make beer, i don't guess you will be serving any home made beer!
