Henry Ford, contrary to popular belief, is not the first car maker or the one that came up with the assembly line. Eli Whitney invented the Assembly line and there were steam cars long before Henry Ford. All he did was come up with a reliable combustion engine and put the assembly line into practical use. As far as who built the first car I do not know, but it was not Henry Ford.

Nicolas Joseph Cugnot was the first to build a steam powered self propelled vehicle in 1769. Henry Ford built the Ford model T which was the fist mass produced vehicle in the world.
