LIcorice is perhaps the best possible way to address the underlying cause: viral infection, while at the same time working as an expectorant and an anti-inflammatory to sooth mucous membranes. This was one of the traditional solutions for the common cold and influenza.

there is no cure for the common cold, but LARGE amounts of Vitamin C helps. My hubby (and i tend to agree) says to take it until you poo it out (that's the only side effect of too much Vit.C), I once took 10,000mg of the stuff while I was sick and my bowels didn't move so I guess my body really needed it!
Vit. C is the vitamin for healing, that's why I suggest this.

to crue the cold my grandma took a bowl water and dishwashing soap put it in the bowl with the water and sniff the bubles into you nose it will burn alot but it works she said shed never had a cold again turst me good luck
