In Islam, Halal is an Arabic term meaning “lawful or permissible” and not only encompasses food and drink, but all matters of daily life.
As to the method of slaughter for halal meat:
So you think bludgeoning, putting a bolt thru a cows head, or electrocution is humane?? Here is a little more info about halal meat for those that are interested.
"Many allegations have been made that Islamic slaughter is not humane to animals. However, Professor Schultz and his colleague Dr. Hazim of the Hanover University, Germany, proved through an experiment, using an Electro encephalograph (EEG) and Electro Cardiogram (ECG) that *Islamic slaughter is The humane method of slaughter and captive bolt stunning practiced by the western method, causes severe pain to the animal. The results surprised many.
Experimental Details:
1. Several electrodes were surgically implanted at various points of the skull of all animals, touching the surface of the brain.
2. The animals were allowed to recover for several weeks.
3. Some animals were slaughtered by making a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck cutting the jugular veins and carotid arteries of both sides; as also the trachea and oesophagus-Halal Method.
4. Some animals were stunned using a captive bolt pistol - humane slaughter by the western method.
5. During the experiment, EEG and ECG were recorded on all animals to record the condition of the brain and heart during the course of slaughter and stunning Results and Discussion:
I. Halal Method
1. The first three seconds from the time of Islamic slaughter as recorded on the EEG did not show any change from the graph before slaughter , thus indicating that the animal did not feel any pain during or immediately after the incision.
2. For the following 3 seconds, the EEG recorded a condition of deep sleep - unconsciousness. This is due to a large quantity of blood gushing out from the body.
3. After the above mentioned 6 seconds, the EEG recorded zero level, showing no feeling of pain at all.
4. As the brain message ( EEG ) dropped to zero level, the heart was still pounding and the body convulsing vigorously (a reflex action of the spinal cord) driving maximum blood from the body: resulting in hygienic meat for the consumer.

RE:
What does Halal mean, exactly?
I heard that Halal means that the animal's neck is slit, and it's allowed to suffer and die while a prayer is said. Is that true?

Halal is not a word we call on meat or food particularly, it has a vast more general meaning used to describe all actions a muslim does during his day that are not sins or "Haram " which is the opposite of "Halal".

My ex-husband is Jordanian and I went with him once to slaughter lambs, you are all on the right track about religion and safe meat. But the main reason is because this is the method used in the Holy Koran. You have to slaughter and prepare the meat just like it states. I also saw it as cruelty, until I learned more about the reasons behind killing in such a brutal way. However, I never went again and I had a hard time eating the meat.

when Muslims want to slaughter an animal which is allowed to be eaten like ( goat, cow, sheep, dear, chicken, roaster, camel,,,etc)
no pigs neither predators, they begin to say "in the name of GOD and he is the greatest" in Arabic "Besmillah Allah Akbar"
and they take very sharp edge knife to slay by cutting the throat.
and let the blood runs out of it, and when they done this it means it is Halal.
Who said the animal suffered while it is been slaying no, the God take the pain as soon as they say the Gods name.
Try to see lions and tigers when they catch their prey, one of them bite it from the throat and, the other don't even bite or chew anywhere from the prey until it dies then, they Begin to eat.
It is a respect between animals.
the others who says the Muslims let the animals suffer beat the animals and shock them by electrical to die and the blood stays in the meet, however the animal suffers and the meet get infected ,would you tell me who respect what!
Islam way is the best way including some other religions, who do the same thing.

no actually the only reason why they slit it's throat is because it's the fastest way for the animal to die (Keeping the meet healthy and secure). other ways might be a bit too harsh. being a muslim myself i should really know more about that but i'm not exactly a meat eater. but i'm sure it has nothing to do with wanting the animal to suffer because that's absurd.

not exactly - it is a style of meat preparation- it has to be butchered in a certain time frame and manner. In many respects it is similar to Kosher.
