why is it when i ask my mom detailed questions about stories in the Bible, i.e. what happened to all the dead bodies that were left behind after the flood, why did God kill pregnant women and young children and babies in the flood, does she say 'well, you just have to take the story as a whole, n not try to discect it?' i'm not trying to be sacreligious, or disrespectful, i just have really minute questions. she's always told me that if i have questions, ask, n there's no such thing as a dumb question, so why is she tearing apart my search for answers now?

It sounds like doesn't mind the questions but it is the ones that she can't answer that is when she treats you in this manner.

You should reaffirm her that if she does not know the answer that it is OK and that the two of you can look for the answer together.

That is what I do with my kids. If I don't know the answer that I will find if I can or we can do it together.

In my opinion, the Bible is extremely exaggerated. Just like most stories that have been handed down for years, things get stretched and different parts change, but the moral of the story stays the same. Some scientists say it was a meteor, some say it was a natural dam that broke and cause a flood that would make New Orleans look like a puddle. But the simple truth of the story is, how ever the flood started.... God told Noah, Noah listened to God, and he was saved.

Your mother is right on one level, you do have to consider the story as a whole. However she needs to answer your questions with more details.

The bodies after the flood: I don't know the exact number of days that Noah was on the ark, but I do know that it was a little over two years. Plenty of time for the bodies to decompose. Also, Genesis 7:11 mentions that the springs of the deep opened up as well as the heavens. Which means that the earth was actually pouring water as well as the clouds. Whose to say that it didn't swallow the bodies as well? When the water receded, who said it all evaporated? Who's to say God didn't open up the earth like pulling the plug from the drain in the bathtub? He is God after all...

As for the pregnant women and young children. This one is easy. The people groups that the Isrealites had to wipe out were evil by nature. They were worshipping Satan and his demons and sacrificing their children to him. As a result they had opened themselves up to demon possession. Allowing them to live would have brought demons among them. As we see in later chapters, the people they allowed to live perverted the next generation of Isrealites and converted them to worshipers of Baal. The surviving generations of Canaanites would eventually become what are now the Muslims. The Bible is very consistent. Whenever we disobey, the consequences are visited unto the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations. Sometimes longer.

Kelly
There are no silly or minute questions when it come sto the bible, it seems that you have a genuine interest, that is good,
many "GROWN UPS" who do not have the answers themselves will tell you to find out for yourself , or to not take BIBLE STORIES literaly. Because they do not have the knowledge to answer.
my suggestion is that you find a church that has a youth group with people your age , who have the same questions you do, you will be surprised just how many of the questions you ask are asked by others your age.
That is why God has put mature Christians in positions as teachers'
Check out a church near you.

We will be praying about this for you.

Maybe she does it because she doesn't really have the answers you are seeking and brushes it off instead of saying she doesn't know. Alot of people are like that.
Or maybe your questions are uncomfortable for her because SHE has also had the same questions but has been taught that it's 'wrong' to question etc etc so she wants to brush it off for that reason.
I don't think your questions are dumb at all nor are they minute. I think they are very intelligent and valid questions and a GOOD pastor/reverend will help you with that.
Don't let her take your curiosity from you. Even God taught to read and to learn, not just to accept what others tell us but to search for the truth ourselves and ask Him for guidance to finding and understanding the truth.
Good luck and be well

She was likely taught not to question the Bible. Since you question it she has to defend it the only way she knows how. Since she can't question it she can't answer yours. Rather then give a real answer such as you have to understand that even women and Children can be evil she tells you to ignore it. Maybe she just can't accept they can be evil. As to the bodies that is an intresting question.

Maybe she is uncomfortable and doesn't quite know how to answer your questions. It doesn't mean you shouldn't still ask them, it's an important part of understanding Christianity and understanding YHVH. The minute details are more important, in fact, than the picture as a whole.

Perhaps you could find others to ask, though, people who are more patient and have more knowledge to explore these questions with you.

Maybe it is because your mother don't much about the Bible. If we don't study and rightly divide the scriptures for our self then we will never know what the Lord is saying for us today. The whole Bible is written for our learning but the whole Bible is not written to us. 2 Timothy 2: 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Another reason why people can't understand their Bible is because they have not believed in what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for them. He died for you sins.

Sincere questions should be answered with Love and understanding. I will try to help. May God bless you for search of his Holy Word.

The Christian life is the simplest life to live on earth. It is the life of a child simply walking in complete trust in a Heavenly Father who will provide all his needs according to His riches in glory. We do not have all the rules and burdens of other ways of life but only one rule; “Come unto Me.” Where the world thinks that things must be analyzed and broken down so that they can be understood, dissected so that weaknesses can be determined and solutions arrived at, disciplines set up and programs followed, Jesus simply says, “Come unto Me”. Are you having problems in your family relationships? Jesus says, “Come unto Me.” Are you having problems with sin? “Come unto Me”. Do you need something? “ Come unto Me”. What a simple and glorious way of life!. And will God correct and remove all the problems and difficulties? Not necessarily but He will “give you rest” in the midst of it all. That is the Christian life.
