If you want to learn to defend yourself, martial arts is one good way; you have many choices in Asia. Check the phone book or internet for nearest school to you. All good martial arts schools and teachers will train your body, mind and spirit :
1. Kalaripayyat (from Kerala state in India)
2. Karate Do
3. Tae Kwan Do
4. Chinese Kung Fu (many varieties and schools)
5. Jujitsu
6. Judo
7. Aikido
If you want to learn to fight, that's a different thing altogether, and solutions include:
8. Boxing
9. Street-fighting
10. Thai boxing ('muay thai')
etc

If you really want to learn to fight and you're ready to take on the dedication and committment that it takes to be a fighter then look around for an all around stand up ground and pound fight school that does it all. Any trainers that train fighters for the UFC, Pride Fighting, King of the Cage, etc.. would be an awesome fight school to enroll into. They will teach you everything you need to know from ground skills to stand up skills. Not too mention they will get you in the best shape of your life mentally and physically. Good luck.

I say look into Kajukenbo. That's what I study. It was developed for self defense on the street. It is a combination of karate, jujitsu, judo, kenpo, and chinese boxing. You can find more information about it on the web by just typing it into a search engine. It's often referred to as brutality with a purpose. However, the first thing you want to do in a conflict is try to difuse the situation. Violence is a last resort and it is only meant to be a means of defense and escape.

Take Jujitsu (Traditional, Brazillian) Classes. Learn, memorize, and constantly meditate the techniques. Buy the Fighters Notebook and The Art of War by SunTzu. If you want to be strong mentally, start believing and acting that you are mentally strong. (Mentally strong people most of the time are closed minded to things that will make them feel like crap.) A perfect example of a mentally strong person would be any type of person that is in the military. (Think and act the way a soldier would act.) Don't show any feelings. Showing your feelings is a sign of weakness and makes you look immature. (The only time that it is good to show your feelings is to someone you are in love with.)

If you want to fight...uhm... not a good idea.
If you want to learn how to defend/handle yourself get in a selfdefence course.
Tough many martial arts are also helpfull they mainly are sports and do not adress hostile actions outside the sport. Like bats, chains, gunpointrobbery, scream your head off, rape... you get the idea.
After you had that course maintaining pratice by joining any martialartsclass is a very good idea.

to be a good fighter on the street, you need to know how to fight standing up and on the ground. 99.9% of all fights go to the ground. if your opponent is much bigger and stronger he will most likely dominate you. but, if you have a good understanding of the ground game you will most likely succeed. most fighters on the street do not know how to defend themselves when taken down to the ground because most martial arts train primarily on striking. if a golden glove boxer wants to fight you, will you stand there and trade punches with him knowing he is trained well on striking? no, you take him to the ground. the boxer is lost because he has never trained to be in a situation like the one he is in. he won't be able to use the only thing that he knows how to do successfully. my best advice to you my friends is to take Brazilian/ Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Also take some Muay Thai training to work on your striking. A mauy thai fighter with 2 years of experience can dominate a Karate, Tae Kwon Do, or Kung Fu black belt. check out the videos on sources .If you are interested, send me an email of where you live and i will tell you where there are some good Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academies near you.

Walk away.
That is a form of self defense.
It may save you from a beating.
"He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day."
Learn to resolve conflict Non-Violently.
Use your mind and out think them.
Fighting is not the only answer.

I would say go with Martial Arts, Ninjutsu, you can pretty much destory the guy who is fighting you, if you know what to do... ninjutsu is fast and effective if you can preform the moves properly, and you can a big guy down with pressure points and jonit locks.
