Below is a link about cat whiskers, I can't imagine any reason dog's have whiskers... my dog's gone without whiskers I don't know if someone cut them off or not but they were really sharp and stabbed me all the time till they grew back... but there's a link to why cat's have them.

Whiskers are sort of like our fingertips. If an animal's whiskers won't fit through the space that the animal is trying to climb into then it's a good indicator to the animal that the space is too small.

Not sure about dogs, but yes balance for cats is one reason, but also they use them to determine if they can fit through a small opening, say a hole in a fence or whatever, if their whiskers drag too much through a hole that they put their head in, it lets them know if they can fit through the opening.

Whiskers are sensory hairs. They are very sensitive, and let them know if there is something approaching, or next to them or whatever. They are like feelers in the dark.

For cats and dogs they are the sensor parts on their bodies so I'm guessing that they are sensors

cats have them to tell them how wide a space they can fit through. i'm not sure about dogs

It is part of their senses system. In the dark it helps them "see" and keep from running into things.
