It belonged to my late sister. She had it in a long-term care facility before she died. Some say it is okay to keep, others say it must be thrown away. It is special, but I do not want to risk my family's health. I have many other things to remember her by, so does it need to be thrown away or can it be kept?

Just to be on the safe side...yes I'd throw them away. You say you have other things to remember her by. She would not have wanted you to become ill because of her.

Maybe there is some way to sterilize them? You should ask a local dry cleaners, or better yet, talk to someone who works in a hospital laundry or someplace like that.

Put them in a freezer for a few days. No bacteria can survive freezing.
