A scrap book of the two would be nice, if you can get the immediate family and close friends of theirs to write a letter to them of their wishes, memories of them, etc. It would personalize it even more, and make it a wonderful heirloom to their children in the years to come.
OR...
A big wicker basket, you can find these mad cheap and new condition at Good will stores, craft stores. Pick a theme and fill it up. Household cleaning supplies. (trash bags, windex, furniture polish, sponges, etc.)
Romance: a wedding cd, a bottle of wine, candles, soaps, washcloths, condoms, etc.
Movie night: popcorn, soda, candy, giftcertificate at blockbuster, blanket, etc
Wrap it with colored cellophane(found at drugstores, card/giftshops, grocerystore), add a pretty bow. Presto! Tip: check out a local dollar store for some of these findings! Great prices!
Good luck to you, I hope I helped! Just be creative and run w/it!

You need to decide is it material or from the heart, some free gifts dint cost anything, and always very unique, or go with what you can afford not with what you want to give unless you can afford it, if you want uniqueness make sure it goes with the couple

I wouldnt go with unique. If the couple has registered somewhere they would probably appreciate that more than anything. I just got married 2 weeks ago. I did receive a pretty cup/saucer/bowl set which was very unique and pretty and I will never use. I received a 4 place dessert set with a cat design (they know I love my kittens) and I will never use it.

If you're close friends and know where they are going on their honeymoon, you might want to arrange for the hotel to have a bottle of champagne for them, or pay for a gift certificate for spa or restaurant services, or for one of the nights they will be staying there. It would be a very nice touch and one they will remember. If this is out of your price range, a honeymoon care kit, with stuff like tylenol, sunblock, a disposable waterproof camera, some snacks, a hair clip for the beach and maybe some beach towels could be cute too.

Give the couple a home-improvement gift card(i.e. from Lowe's or Home Depot). This only works well if they have a house or apartment, but it might be a nice gesture, especially if they are just moving in somewhere.

A nice picture frame or album that they can put their wedding pitures in. This both thoughtful and useful!

If they don't already have an account with Blockbuster.com or Netflix, get them one.
