They are sold, and have a few buyer. They are not very popular at all. Part of this is the way cars are built everywhere but America. The whole driving on the left-hand side of the road tends to make people shy away from buying right-hand cars. Other than that, it's mostly collectors who buy A cars, as they're called. Especially popular are the larger cars that Japanese companies make fewer of.
However, by and by, American-built cars are not popular in Japan.

Things are starting to change as the Big 3 realize they need to go global (including Japan). I saw somewhere a few years ago that the Japanese TV and movie people always had the bad guys driving American cars which the US makers didnt see as fair. Since then it has changed and we have sold more cars overthere, although not nearly as many as we buy of theirs.

They do make some models for Japan, left hand/right hand systems has nothing to do with it. The main reason is most American models do not appeal to most Japanese, especially when they have lots of choice among smaller cars made by Japanese companies like Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Honda etc etc.

Not really. Our cars don't meet the fuel efficiency standards of theirs or any other country's.
