A friend with chickens gives me eggs, but sometime I am unable to pick them up until later in the day. As she gathers from the chickens, she refrigerates the eggs, then on the day that I am to pick them up, set sets them outside and I come and pick them up. If I pick them up later, while they've been in the sun, are they still safe to use? When I bring them home, I put them in the refrigerator. I check them for freshness and they always seem to be fresh. Thank you.

Exposure to warmer temperatures during the day may make them unsafe to eat. If the eggs have been exposed to temperatures above 40°F for more than 2 hours, they should be discarded. According to USDA food safety advice, “A cold egg left out at room temperature can sweat, facilitating the growth of bacteria. Refrigerated eggs should not be left out more than 2 hours."

I think that's risking it. I'd be careful if I were you. Eggs are not supposed to be out of the refrigerator for long. And especially not in the sun. Can your your friend put them somewhere in the shade instead?

Yes, they probably are but why don't you get a small cooler & have her put then in it.
You wouldn't even need ice. Just to keep them from getting hot.
Eggs keep a lot longer and are tougher then most people think.
I think Sunset is thinking of milk. The process of pasteurization uses heat. You would get cooked eggs.

You can try floating the eggs in water. If they float, they've gone bad.
Nice that your friend provides you with eggs -- could she put them in the shade or sit them on a cold-pak?
I buy my eggs, most come pasteurized these days which safeguard against spoiling.

Wouldn't risk it. Sitting in the sun all day doesn't sound like a good idea for eggs (and for most food, actually).

Ask her to put them in the shade and be very careful because you could get sick easily
