How do you feel about students throwing up their hats at graduation?

At the high school in my town graduating seniors are forbidden from throwing up their hats at graduation. They are given many talks and are told it's disrespectful to their teachers. They are told that it's saying "hat's off to education" I attended the graduation last night and two students were thrown out in the begining for high fiving and waving, then not allowed to participate and/or watch the rest of graduation. Then four students threw up their hats at the end and were told to walk out before the rest of the class. The police escorted them out. I actually know one of the kids who high fived and he's on of the nicest people in the world. So my question (finally) is has anyone ever heard of any other schools who prohibit the throwing of the hats or have such strict rules during graduation?

No, this sounds ridiculous! I think rude gestures or things that detract from the ceremony should be banned but this sounds like a bunch of old folks running the show. every year the US Air Force Academy graduates are features on the front page of the news throwing their hats as high as they can. This is one of the most well respected educational institutions in the nation and has a stringent honor code, so if it is okay here I would think it would be acceptable everywhere.

This is completely ridiculous! It's a harmless tradition that students should be able to follow if they choose to. Nothing should be mandatory and the fact that the police were involved seems like such a waste of tax payer dollars that could be better spent protecting the citizens of your town from actual criminals.

They say it's dangerous, which is a valid point given the sharp corners of the hats. We were told in no uncertain terms at my HS graduation that we were not to throw our hats in the air under any circumstances, or we would have had to go back to the HS to get our diplomas three days later.

Throwing your hat up after graduation is tradition. It sounds to me like your school is being ridiculous about this. You should have your parents contact the school board and ride their a** until something can be done!
