1. It's totally disrespectful.
2. How does that make you look? (assuming you're not in
college, why is an adult up & calling people at 5 am?) You will
look like a desperate loser.
3. Most people are sleeping at 5am. And they know this.
4. It shows you don't care if you are waking someone up, all you
care about is yourself & whatever it is you need to say at 5am.
5. You are probably tired & not thinking straight & therefore may
say something you will regret.
6. Every situation appears different in the morning.
7. Whatever you have to say will be better received if someone is
not disturbed in the middle of the night for you to say it.
8. It shows a lack of maturity on the caller's part.
9. What is so important that an entire household needs to be
awakened? (They might have small children or even a baby
sleeping at their house)
10. Its just rude. Period.

I dunno if I can get 10...
1. They'll be asleep and you'll wake them up, which they won't like.
2. Since people hardly ever get calls at that time, they will often assume that the call is some kind of emergency and that something bad must have happened, therefore (assuming it's not an emergency) you'll have worried them without cause.
3. Since the person will most likely have only just woken up, they probably won't be able to think straight and won't talk much sense.
4. The person may well just answer the phone, then afterwards go straight back to sleep and not remember getting the call when they wake up again. Therefore if you called them to tell them something, you just wasted your time.
5. You could easily wake up other people in the house who aren't the one's you are calling.
There may be more, but I can't think of any :)

Because you don't call people after 9pm and before 8am. The first thought people will have when the phone rings at that hour will be that something disastrous had happened. If it isn't an emergency you take a chance of not only interrupting their sleep, but infants and children as well.
