What should you look for when trying to find a cocker spaniel to breed??

Don't breed dogs. Over 6 million dogs and cats are euthanized in the US each year because there aren't enough homes for the animals already in existance. These are nice animals, family pets, puppies and kittens, all put to sleep because of irresponsible owners who don't spay/neuter their pets or abandon them.

Go volunteer at a shelter or Animal Control for a couple of weeks and really see how much of a problem it is.

Most dogs in pet stores came from something called puppy mills. The dogs there are inbred, unhealthy, and are taken from thier mothers too early. Most of these dogs have serious health conditions that run responsible owners thousands of dollars or serious temperament problems.

As for breeding- go to a few dog shows, ask responsible breeders what it takes. Dog breeding is not easy, and to do it right is very expensive. Most responsible dog breeders lose money, rather than make money.

If you are looking for a cocker spaniel, check out www.petfinder.com. There are a lot of them out there, and they all need homes.

I'd get the Dalmatian.Airedales and Huskies should be groomed professionally. Airedales especially need clipping. And Huskies don't like the heat. They like snow. The Dalmatian now,he'll need a bath with some diluted shampoo and a garden hose. A Boxer Lab,or Beagle would also like the area that you mentioned. But watch the hound. They will run away if they "catch the sent" of a animal they want to chase down. All of the other breeds that you mention will either be double coated breeds that shed heavily and would need special baths2 - 3 times a year to prevent shed/matting or would need to have hair cuts and grooming done about every 8 to 10 weeks to be kept from matting up.(Bad knots through out the hair) Running through paddocks will also get dogs matted like Afghans and Cocker/poodle mixes. I say go to the shelter and get yourself a nice short haired dog that needs a home. Elena's correct. I've never owned a Dal but I know that they are a good dog.I've worked around a lot of they and never had a bad experience.

Pet stores are not the place to get breeding quality animals. Find a reliable breeder - BREEDER not producer. Go to a show and talk with people there. Get familiar with the AKC standard for cockers - that will tell you in detail what to look for.

a Pet Store is the ABSOLUTE WORST PLACE to buy a puppy, especially for breeding, but even for pet quality - they are the WORST - they overcharge for puppies they paid very little for and whom were bred ONLY For the purpose of making money - no regard to genetics, health, or behavior.. they have been kept in cages since birth and often have behavioral problems.. their moms are kept in cages breeding more and more and more.. supporting this industry is WRONG!!! if everyone quit buying from pet stores, such inferior breeders would no longer exist -
think about this - if you were a good breeder why would you hide anyonomously behind a pet store???

OK if you are looking for BREEDING QUALITY the ONLY place to go is a Repulatable Breeder who has taken BOTH parents to shows to prove they are Worthy representatives of the breed, worthy of passing on their genetics -
a breeding quality dog isnt cheap either... unfortanately people seem to think just because a dog is female it should be bred but in reality this is not ethical... or good for the breed as a whole -
if you get a dog you should in turn take it to dog shows to prove its worthyness as a breeder....

otherwise spay and neuter - if you want a pet put the love of it first and a spayed/ neutered pet is a happier healthier pet, with fewer health risks...

Stay away from pet stores. The dogs usually are taken away from mom too young, not socialized, often sick, worms, ear/eye infections and are not the "top of the breed" that you want. Pet store also have very strict policies regarding any refund, or replacement if the dog should need more that ordinary vet care, which unfortunately they often do. I know they are cute and you feel sorry for them, but you'll pay a lot of money for a porbably, not so healthy, not so good dog. I know this from experience.

I got my cocker spaniel from petfinder.com. He's a wonderful pet. Cocker spaniels need alot of attention so be sure you are prepared to meet their needs. If your not sure, then i'd recommend you adopt a pet from your local pound.

Private breeders are better than pet stores; generally they can give you much more info on the animal than pet stores. Get to know a breeder, volunteer to work with them to gain the knowledge that you are looking for.

be cautious when buying any pet from a pet store. They sometimes tend to have animals that are to in bred. This causes new animals to have move of the bad traits of a breed.

no, they are sick dogs that are taken away from their constantly bred and probably sick themselves mother. by doing this you are promoting puppy mills where animals are raised in deplorable conditions. just say no. look for a cocker spaniel rescue in your area.
